Dominica – Dominica

Step back in time on an island that has changed little since it was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, get away into its natural spaces, relax and enjoy the sweet breeze that will blow your hair as you’re walking around. Dominica, one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean, is a place that you should definitely visit.

One of the things you can do on this island is walking through its pristine rainforest, that dwindles on the banks of the Emerald Pool. Get in into its chilly waters and swim to a breathtaking waterfall that hides the entrance to a rocky cavern on the far side. Dominica is the major Caribbean island in having a huge percentage of land dedicated to national parks and forest reserves. Therefore, you have plenty of natural areas to explore and enjoy their unique beauty.

Secluded black-sand beaches, mountains covered with verdant vegetation, lakes, hot thermal-spring, and a variety of rivers where you can swim or fish; this island is the closest you will get to the Garden of Eden. Dominica has also a rich Creole culture that can be seen in the island’s cuisine, festivals, and carnivals; but still, the main attraction of this place lays in its natural areas.

If you’re aimed to walk, you can search the endangered Sisserou parrot in the Syndicate Nature Trail, where you will have to climb the Morne Trois Pitons peak. If you are more keen on relaxing than exploring and don’t feel like walking, you can still enjoy seeing some whales when you’re there, standing in a beach bank.

Remember that these islands are located on the Tropico, so they have a tropical climate that allows you to visit them whenever you want. However, you have to know that between the months of August and October is when it rains the most. Pick some dates that fit with your schedule and don’t miss the opportunity to visit Dominica.

How can you get there?

The first thing you have to know is that there are no direct flights to Dominica from Europe or North America. Therefore, the most convenient waystations are Puerto Rico, Antigua, and St. Lucia. Also, you can get there by taking a ferry; l’Express des Iles offers high-speed services from Martinique, St. Lucia, and Guadeloupe.

Where can you stay and what to do?

You can stay at the Fort Young Hotel that lays inside the walls of a ruined 18th-century British colonial fort and has a view to the astonishing waterfront in Roseau, the national capital. Also, if you want to have more fun while being here, Ken’s Hinterland Adventure Tours offers guided hikes, waterfall safaris, and other nature activities.
