The following highlights some of the popular Traditional Basotho Foods. If you manage to be in an Basotho restaurant or you are visiting Lesotho, I recommend the following

1. Mielie Soup

The term Mielie is mainly used to describe the traditional Miieie (maize) flour used to make stiff Miieie meals known locally as “Pap ” or hard porridge, which is a staple food for most South Africans.

2. Bean Salad

This is a salad made from a mixture of beans and chopped vegetables. The beans used in this dish are usually pre-cooked and are often served with balsamic vinegar.

3. Couscous

It is a durum wheat cereal served with meat, vegetables, beans or nuts. It is perfect hot or cold. Couscous is usually steamed.

4. Kebab

It is a typical meat in Iran, Pakistan and some African countries. Although they differ from place to place, they all have one thing in common: the meat is ground and marinated. In general, kebab refers to rolls of minced meat that are pressed and baked in a vertical oven, which also suggests that kebab may refer to cooking over kabobs or kebabs.

5. Spinach Soup

This spinach stew transforms a bland vegetable like spinach into a delicious dish. It is eaten with everything, and sometimes on its own. Also known as vegetable soup and known locally as “Efo Riro”, it is one of the most delicious spinach recipes in Africa.

Chakalaka is a lightly spiced vegetarian stew that uses very few ingredients. It is usually served with polenta or rice. It is very tasty. A complete protein meal of vegetable origin provided by soya or white beans.

9. Boerewors with pap and Chakalaka

This is a very popular dish consisting of maize or maize meal, wors (South African sausage) and chakalaka, a side dish that includes tomatoes, onions, garlic and black pepper. and other ingredients in the recipe. This dish is suitable for all occasions and the fact that it is relatively inexpensive makes it a popular dish among South Africans of all socio-economic levels.

10. Muamba de Galinha

Muamba de Galinha is made with chicken, onion, palm oil or muamba, garlic, okra and angora peppers called gindungo. This is a delicious delicacy that will satisfy lovers of strong traditional flavors.
