Stunning landscapes that will let you speechless, where your attention will be caught by the mountainous areas that no other Caribbean island has, and where the sound of the sea will be a relaxing melody for your ears. You can find all of these on the beautiful island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean.

Even though Rodney Bay is the place where most tourism is centered, we still recommend you to hire a car in order to explore the rest of St. Lucia. The road on the island not only follows part of the coast but it also goes inland, therefore you will be able to see the mountainous interiors that are covered with impenetrable rainforests.

To the north of Rodney Bay, you will find the incredible Gros Islet which is a village that you definitely can’t miss. On Fridays, the “jump-up” street party takes place with loud sound systems, you will see tourists and locals dancing and drinking beer, while some stalls are selling chicken; all of this makes an unforgettable experience that you should be wishful to live.

Another place that you have to visit is Pigeon Island National Historic Park. This peninsula hides much history in its surroundings, and even nowadays you can still stand on the ruins of the different fortifications and enjoy seeing the panoramic views that extend to the far island of Martinique. Once you have finished walking around this place, you should head to Soufrière which used to be the capital of St. Lucia when it was under French rule, and it’s the oldest town here.

The Pitons are two mountains that are home to eroded lava domes, rare plant species, and endemic birds species. The best way to fully appreciate the beauty of these twin peaks is by taking a helicopter ride, which will take you around them and will skim down over the green rainforest, located in their lower slopes.

If you feel like you also want to visit some rainforests, there are a variety of reserves where you can visit them. At the foot of Mount Gimie, you will find 7690 hectareas of spotless forests in the Central Rainforest Reserve that encloses rainforest, cloud forest, and woodland. All of these can be seen as you climb the mountain’s slopes, and if you take the Enbas Saul trail, you will have the opportunity to see the two waterfalls that are on the Troumasse River.

Heading to the south-west coast of St. Lucia, you will find the peaceful Balenbouche Estate with its historic plantation house. Also, you will see an old sugar mill that nowadays looks like it’s being strangled by the roots of a ficus tree. Although tourism is important for the island, its main income comes from the bananas that they grow in plantations, so don’t be surprised if it plays a major role in St. Lucia’s cuisine.

Just for you to know

The best time to visit St. Lucia is during the dry season that takes place from January to April. From USA and Europe, you can take direct flights to Hewanorra International Airport, which is about a 90-minutes drive from Rodney Bay. Last but not least, inter-Caribbean flights use the George F. L. Charles Airport in Castries.
