The park’s flora evolves according to altitude and substrate, being more intense in the mountainous area, which also receives the most rainfall. The area is very rich in plains and is home to typical herbivores such as red-fronted gazelles, elephants and giraffes. Behind them, predators specialised in open spaces such as wild dogs and cheetahs, but also others such as leopards. The town of Ndéle, about ten hours from the capital, is the base for Manovo-Gounda St Floris. This is where safaris can be booked using the road that crosses the park in the direction of Birao.

2. Oubangui River, Bangui

It is one of the world’s 50 largest river basins and from its source serves as the border between the Central African Republic to the north and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Much of the region is covered by dense equatorial rainforest, and large portions of the region are permanently flooded.

3. Boali Falls, Ombella-M’Poko

With their 250-metre wide waterfalls emerging from the virgin jungle, they are a must for adventure tourism lovers. Coming from the M’bari River, which pours its waters in a stretch 50 m high and 250 m wide, in a stunning setting of virgin jungle. Descend the waterfalls, down the staircase carved into the rock. A steep path leads down to the lake below. Do not swim under any circumstances: the lake is crawling with crocodiles.

4. Dzanga-Sangha Reserve, Sangha-Mbaéré

Visitors can see large mammals such as forest buffaloes, gorillas, forest elephants, wild pigs and antelopes in the region. In the Dzanga part of the area, more than three thousand elephants have been identified and counted over the years. From a platform on the edge of the salt pans, tourists can frequently see between thirty and a hundred elephants feeding on the salt-rich soil, and can also observe their social behaviour. Another popular activity in the park is palm wine tapping, where visitors board a canoe that takes them to different landscapes of swamps and mangrove swamps where raffia palm trees are found.
