TOP 10 Traditional Togolese Foods

The following highlights some of the popular Traditional Togolese Foods. If you manage to be in an Togolese restaurant or you are visiting Togo, I recommend the following

1. Koklo meme

The Koklo meme is just grilled chicken with spicy sauce made from chili. Like all grilled food, the chicken is served juicy and hot, with the characteristic smoky flavor. The chili sauce is added to the chicken, either drizzled or served separately.

2. Gbomo Dessi

It is also called “feuille sauce” in reference to the spinach leaves, as it contains large amounts of spinach. Fried chicken or beef is also mixed in. To be made, the meat for Gboma Dessi is cooked before seasoning and frying. The meat for Gboma Dessi is cooked before seasoning and frying.

3. Cacahuetes

It is the famous Togolese cornbread. A slightly sweet bread, these patties serve as an accompaniment to fried or stewed chicken/fish or leaf sauce, moyo or a spicy sauce. In some regions, it is also called “Abolo”.

6. Djenkoume

It is a corn flour pâte served with pieces of chicken, spices, onion and tomato. It is a very popular side dish, usually the favorite for fried chicken.

7. Fufu

It is considered a favorite throughout the country. It is made from yam that is boiled and then mashed to make a dough, which is then cooked. Fufu can be eaten on its own. Although most Togolese prepare various dips and sauces to add more flavor. You can find it in street stalls and restaurants.

8. Grilled Togo Chicken

Traditional Togolese cuisine includes many poultry dishes. Grilled Togo chicken is perhaps the easiest, most straightforward and of course delicious Togolese method of preparing chicken. In this process, pieces of chicken are marinated with salt, pepper, cayenne, ginger, garlic and red palm oil.

9. Akume

It is a delicious corn porridge made from ground corn, fermented yucca and water. It is usually eaten with the hands and is served with different sauces, from smoked fish to spicy tomato and peanuts.

10. Kokonte

It is a traditional food consumed in some parts of Africa, such as Ghana and Togo. It is made from dried and mashed cassava, or manioc, and takes on a brownish appearance once made. It is usually served with soup, sauce or ground peppers on the side.
