TOP 10 Traditional Tunisian Foods

The following highlights some of the popular Traditional Tunisian Foods. If you manage to be in an Tunisian restaurant or you are visiting Tunisia, I recommend the following

1. Lablabi

It is a typical Tunisian broth, similar to a soup, which is usually taken during lunch. It is made from chickpeas with added bread and seasoned with spices.

2. Bambalouni

The Bambaloni is a beignet type sweet typical of Tunisia. It is prepared with a flour paste fried in oil and eaten sprinkled with sugar. You can find it at any time in Tunisia or buy it in fast food stores.

3. Felfel mahchi

It is a traditional and very delicious dish made from sweet peppers stuffed with meat, usually lamb, and served with harissa sauce that is sometimes topped with a spicy red sauce.

4. Houria

It is one of the lightest recipes of Tunisian gastronomy as it is a carrot salad with cumin and a bit of spice. It can be known by the name of Salatit Omik Houria.

5. Kamounia

This dish is very interesting and appetizing, it is a combined stew of beef and liver prepared with a tasty thick sauce and cumin to taste. The kamounia is also prepared with lamb, liver, heart and if you want you can add kidney. This dish is seasoned with parsley and onion. To taste this tasty food you can serve it with potatoes.

6. Khobz Tabouna

Khobz means bread in Tunisian. There are several types such as ‘khobz mlawi’ which is a kind of semolina pancake, ‘khobz tabouna’ which is eaten hot with many different dishes and is made in the tabouna, ‘khobz tajin’ is a bread made with semolina and yeast and finally the Italian bread of the Tunisians called ‘Khobz talian’. All of them are used as side dishes or stuffed.

7. Koucha

It is a type of bread mentioned above that is made in an oven bearing the same name, a clay oven buried in the ground in a conical shape and open at the top. The balls of bread dough are flattened against the walls and heated with a fire that is made with wood at the bottom.

8. Makoud

It is known by various names, such as meguina, makoud, ma’akoud, m’hmer, or simply, Jewish omelet. This dish consists of a potato and meat casserole similar to a quiche (savory pie based on beaten eggs, liquid cream and other products such as vegetables, meats, etc.).

9. Marqa

It refers to a particular kind of Tunisian slow-cooked stew made with meat, tomato paste, onion, garlic and spices.  It is a delicious sauce that has harissa as a particular ingredient. No Tunisian meal would be complete without this marqa.

10. Osbane

It is a sausage typical of the gastronomy of several Arab countries. It is a kind of sausage stuffed with a mixture of rice, herbs, lamb, chopped liver and heart. This dish is usually served along with the main meal of rice or couscous, often on special occasions.
