TOP 10 Traditional Chadian Foods

The following highlights some of the popular Traditional Chadian Foods. If you manage to be in an Chadian restaurant or you are visiting Chad, I recommend the following

1. Fungasso

They are actually fried cheese balls. This is a very simple and quick preparation that is ideal to serve as a starter at lunchtime or as an aperitif to enjoy mid-morning.

2. Tilapia

It is a fish that is frequently consumed in the north due to the proximity of Lake Chad.  However, it is a dish widely consumed throughout Chad due to the quality and abundance of the type of fish. It is usually served with rice or in quesadillas.

3. Mula Sharmoot

It is a very popular and traditional DIP, made from meat that is used to give a special flavor to breads and pancakes.

4. Peanut Sauce

This peanut sauce is a delicious staple of Chadian African cuisine. It can be enjoyed over meat, rice, potatoes or vegetables, and is a wonderful choice for condimenting any dish.

5. Daraba

The main ingredient is okra. This vegetable is widely consumed in Africa and can be found in many greengrocers’ shops, especially in ethnic neighborhoods. It is a plant that is not suitable for all tastes as its texture is somewhat gelatinous. But in many African countries it is indispensable in any pantry as it is not only used as a main ingredient in stews but also to thicken vegetables or to make soups and broths.

6. Jarret de Boeuf

Beef shank stew is a very popular stew in Chad. It is meat accompanied by simmered vegetables. It is a very nourishing and healthy dish.

7. Jus de Fruit

Is a traditional drink prepared with mango, milk, sugar and cardamom powder, milk and soft drinks.

8. Aiyash

They are a kind of fried millet pancakes and balls. Aiyash is a dish eaten by Chadian in which millet balls are dipped in various sauces.

9. Kisser

The interesting thing about working only with sourdough, with no flour added at the time, is that in sourdough the flour is fermented and this minimizes or eliminates the problems of wheat anti-nutrients. Thus the pancakes are much better digested and we do not suffer the effects of gluten, lectins or phytic acid.

10. LaBouillie

Is a traditional breakfast cereal served hot. The main ingredients are rice or wheat, milk, peanut butter and flour. It is a must-have for any table every morning.
