THE BEST Places To Visit In Zanzibar

The following list highlights some of the best places to visiting in Zanzibar. So if you are in Zanzibar, I recommend visiting the following:

  1. Prison Island, Changuu Private Island, Zanzibar
  2. Nakupenda Beach, Nakupenda Island, Zanzibar
  3. Mnemba Island, Unguja, Zanzibar

1. Prison Island, Changuu Private Island

Although its real name is Changuu, the reality is that most tourists know it as Prison Island. This is because it was used as a prison for rebel slaves. Today you can visit part of this prison and relive a little of the hardships suffered by the slaves, but the island is now a nature reserve and its main attraction is to see the giant land tortoises imported from Seychelles in the late nineteenth century. The visit to Prison Island will end at one of its beaches. This island has some fantastic beaches with turquoise waters where you can do some snorkelling.

2. Nakupenda Beach, Nakupenda Island

Nakupenda Beach is located in Stone Town, the old part of Zanzibar City. It is a tremendously beautiful and unique place that will delight anyone who appreciates deserted places dominated by peace. This beach is quite similar to those that can be found in the Caribbean, but with an advantage: it is much more exotic and natural. Although Zanzibar is a tourist area, it has not yet reached the extremes of the countries bathed by the Caribbean Sea. As for the sand, it is totally clean.

3. Mnemba Island, Unguja

The protected area of Mnemba is formed by a coral reef 7 kilometres long and 4 kilometres wide, which allows for some of the best snorkelling on the island. It is also an area frequented by dolphins, so it is another reason to visit the area. Mnemba Atoll is a protected area and perhaps the most important in Zanzibar. You cannot land on the atoll itself, as it is a private island and permission is required, but you can land right in front of it. There is an extension of white sand in the middle of the sea, which when the tide goes out, is open to the air, and from where we can observe the extensive range of blues to the horizon. To visit it is necessary to do it by boat or in a dhow, one of those wooden boats and sail so typical of this area.
