  3. Ruvubu National Park, Karuzi, Burundi
  4. Kibira National Park, Muramvya, Burundi

It is an important nesting area for birds, many of them migratory. It is also home to some 200 mammals. It covers an area of 9000 hectares and its altitude varies between 780 and 1000 metres. It was officially established in 2001. It is 15 km north of the town of Bujumbura and is home to 19 species of hippopotamus and sitatungas.

2. Monte Heha, Rural Bujumbura

Burundi’s highest mountain, it is part of the Burundi Highlands mountain range. The mountain is popular for hiking and at 2,864m is a good challenge for anyone seeking the summit. The mountain is located quite close to Bujumbura and this is the most convenient place to use as a base before embarking on the climb. The view is amazing once at the top.

3. Ruvubu National Park, Karuzi

It is the largest ecosystem in the country with an area of about 50,000 hectares. The landscapes are varied: rocky hills, wooded savannas and forest galleries of all kinds. Ruvubu National Park is named after one of its occupants: the hippopotamus. There are also antelopes, some rare species such as the bohor antelope, as well as baboons, buffalo, warthogs, and so on. Although the visit is generally done in vehicles, there is the possibility to take short walks with the help of guides.

4. Kibira National Park, Muramvya

In this park you will find wildlife that is a real sanctuary for animals such as chimpanzees, baboons and other kinds of monkeys, which scurry away from the reach of visitors to this park and watch over everything from above. A hundred and eighty kilometre network of roads and trails are mainly used by forest guard patrols and motorised tourists. These park guards escort visitors into the forests in a quiet and peaceful manner where they can discover the great attractions of these native forests against the backdrop of beautiful bird songs.

5. Nyakazu, Rutana

The best time to visit Nyakazu in Burundi is from May to September. During this period, you will have a pleasant temperature and little rainfall. One of the major attractions is the Nyakazu Faults, also known as the “German Faults”, one of the most memorable places that commemorate the resistance of King MWEZI GISABO’s troops to the Germans.
