1. Baía das Gatas, São Vicente Island

Baía das Gatas is a huge natural swimming pool, as the outlet to the sea is closed off by rocks that form a barrier. This tranquil bay is transformed in mid-August when Cape Verdean music fills the sand during the Baía das Gatas Festival, one of the oldest and most important in the country. But the rest of the year its calm is only broken by the arrival of fishermen.

2. Pico do Fogo, Fogo Island

It is the highest peak in Cape Verde. It is common for visitors to want to see not only the surroundings of Pico do Fogo but also to climb to certain heights, some daring to go to the very top, and the paths that exist for this purpose are usually paved to facilitate the walk and its recognition, and along them it is possible to find different houses of various styles that give the place an atmosphere of its own. It is recommended to be accompanied by a local guide to avoid accidents, and the walk takes about three hours, but the view from up there is spectacular.

3. Fogo National Park, Fogo Island

The natural landscape, deeply marked by the volcano and its crater, is a unique and rare beauty, with the potential to become a world heritage site. The park exemplifies the most representative sample of the humid mountain ecosystems of Fogo Island and one of the most important ecosystems of Cape Verde.

4. Chaves Beach, Boa Vista Island

For sea and sand lovers, the beaches of Cape Verde are a real treat. You’ll feel like the only person on the planet with 5.6km of sand around you, so if you’re looking to get away from it all and disconnect from the world, this is the beach for you. It’s worth at least one visit to experience a beach environment like no other.

5. Buracona, Island of Sal

It is a natural lava pool, where the sea water enters and creates wonderful places. Here you will find a cave called “El ojo” where you can observe the phenomenon of refraction and reflection of light in the water. It is possible to dive into the cave, entering through a tunnel. Due to the tides, the conditions of the pool change daily. Many days are ideal for swimming; but on other days the pool will experience the force of the ocean.

6. Deserto de Viana,  Boa Vista Island

As its name suggests, it is a desert of dunes and white sand that forms part of the Boa Esperanza Nature Reserve. The sand of this desert, transported by the strong winds, reaches from the Sahara to this island of Cape Verde with an approximate area of 5 square kilometres. Please note that access to the dunes with motor vehicles is prohibited.

7. Serra da Malagueta, Santiago Island

Start your walk with a descent through a mixture of green vegetation and bare earth, then go down the middle of the stream to the gongon valley. Along the way you will find corn, beans or siqueiro agriculture and some eucalyptus trees. So put on your trainers and go hiking in the Serra de Malagueta Natural Park.

8. Pico da Antónia, Santiago Island

Located at an altitude of 1394 metres. From the top of Santiago Island’s highest peak, you will enjoy breathtaking views of the St. George’s Valley. In addition, if the weather is clear, you can see the outlines of the islands of Maio and Fogo on the horizon. From the top, you can take a picnic to relax and enjoy the view and the fresh air.

9. Ribeira da Janela, Santo Antão Island

Janela is a fishing port located on the coastal route; many excursions can be made in the surrounding area. You have to wait for the wet season to see streams and waterfalls flowing. It is also in summer that you can enjoy all the beaches and coves. This excursion offers breathtaking views; the cliffs overlook a busy sea, and the scenery is breathtaking.
