One of the most wonderful things you can experience when traveling is learning about a new culture and being able to know more about the people who live there. Vanuatu is very known by its local culture and traditional ceremonies, two aspects that have become a source of income and pride for the Ni-Vanuatu people, Vanuatu’s inhabitants.

The most famous ceremony of the Ni-Vanuatu people is called Naghol, which takes place on the island of Pentecost and it’s very interesting to watch. It’s believed that this celebration or kastom, as they call it, will help to have better crops, so it’s usually held around harvest time (April-June). Naghol is not only a simple ritual with chanting and dancing, but it’s also an experience that will make your heart skip a beat. This ritual is considered the forerunner of bungee, as it involves having tied a yam vine around each ankle and jumping from a high construction, which is around 15 and 30 meters tall and built by the Ni-Vanuatu people themselves!

As other islands around the world, there are beautiful beaches where you can admire the sunset, but we assure you that not many places have black sand beaches as Vanuatu does. Maybe now you’re wondering why the sand has this peculiar color. Vanuatu is one of the countries with the greatest number of active volcanoes, so it’s not surprising at all to find black sand here, also known as volcanic sand, which is the result of the eruptions and volcanic activities that have taken and still take place in Vanuatu.

If you’re a brave person who is always craving for more challenging and adventurous expeditions, Vanuatu is certainly the right place for you. Vanuatu hosts a variety of active volcanoes and you can choose from the different volcano treks available in the islands. Your options range from the astonishing lava lakes of Ambryn to the most famous and constant erupting volcano called Mount Yasur on Tanna Island.
