TOP 10 Traditional Solomon Islander Foods

The following highlights some of the popular Traditional Solomon Islander Foods. If you manage to be in an Solomon Islander restaurant or you are visiting Solomon Island, I recommend the following:

1. Tuna with Noodles

Tuna (Taiyo) is a daily staple in the Solomon Islands, eaten almost every day and many garnish it with chilli to make it more interesting. Tuna is always on the menu in the Solomon Islands.

2. Pumpkin Coconut and Lime Soup

This dish combines chopped orange squash with coconut milk, lime juice, curry powder and herbs such as garlic, ginger and onion for a hearty soup. If anyone is confused, they’ve put almost all the ingredients in the name of the dish. Fast and easy to make, this healthy soup is best served with chopped coriander or basil leaves.

3. Green Paw Paw Curry

This curry is made from the soft but firm flesh of the unripe green papaya common in the Solomon Islands. The papaya is mixed with coconut milk, curry powder, onion and garlic and then simmered until the papaya cubes are soft. The hot dishes are best served over white rice.

4. Cassava pudding

The most common pudding in the Solomon Islands is tapioca (or cassava) pudding. This is more of a salted cake than a pudding. It is made with grated cassava, sweet potato and coconut milk. All are typically baked all afternoon in an open-air motu or oven, under shiny stones, banana leaves or even. After baking, the ‘pudding’ is moist and wavy. And only when the preparation cools down does it become firm enough to cut.

5. Cabbage and Coconut Soup

This Solomon Islands dish combines chopped orange squash with coconut milk, lime juice, curry powder and spices such as garlic, ginger and onion for a hearty soup. If anyone is confused, they’ve put almost all the ingredients in the name of the dish. Fast and easy to make, this healthy soup is best served with chopped coriander or basil leaves.
