TOP 10 Traditional Scillonian Foods

The following highlights some of the popular Traditional Scillonian Foods. If you manage to be in an Scillonian restaurant or you are visiting Isles of Scilly, I recommend the following:

1. Cornish Scallops with Pepper Salsa

This is a very simple bistro-style scallop dish using the island’s best scallops. The croutons on the plate add great texture, while the spring onions and lemon juice cut through the butter. After they are cooked, spread on top with croutons and spring onions and serve, simply delicious.

2. Hake Fillet with a Saffron Sugar Snap Pea Risotto

The hake fillets are cooked until perfectly crispy and flaky, then rested on a delicious saffron risotto. With lots of cheese, fresh rocket and a squeeze of lemon, this is simple sophistication at its finest!

3. Crab

These crabs live in a rich marine environment and develop the perfect texture and flavour. These crabs are so prized for their high quality and unique flavour that they are often the crabs of choice in fine dining restaurants in Europe and the UK. They are usually cooked whole in brine and the meat is used to make classic crab cakes, soups, salads and sandwiches.

4. Dough Balls with Chocolate Sauce

The ingredients needed to make these mini treats are water, milk, strong white bread flour, yeast, sugar, salt and olive oil. They are served as an appetiser at a party, as a dessert with a sweet chocolate sauce. They are perfect for any occasion and are delicious served hot with a cup of tea as they are if you don’t want sweet sauce.

5. Pizza Topped with Beef Meatballs

Combines Italian and British favourites in one comforting dish. Tender, tasty meatballs are thinly sliced and topped with fresh mozzarella, parmesan, pasta and a meatball-inspired marinara sauce for the ultimate meatball pizza recipe. Topped with a layer of fresh parmesan cheese, this simple pizza will become a new favourite!

6. Bryher Lobster

Bryher is a small island in the scilly group, because of this it is common seafood, but you should not pass the opportunity to try the lobster from Island Fish Ltd, since 2015 offering lobster, wet fish, crab quiche, minced crab, potted crab, crab rolls, lobster salads and more. They are all delicious and famous on the island.

7. Asparagus Fritters

British asparagus promises more than a mere delicacy. These sweet and sour spears are a harbinger of summer. They are boiled and tossed with melted butter and sprinkled with sea salt. While asparagus is excellent on its own, it also makes a very good side dish, with spicy English mustard, a garlic mayonnaise and lemon. Or parmesan, stilton or bottarga.
