TOP 10 Traditional Kittitian Foods

The following highlights some of the popular Traditional Kittitian Foods. If you manage to be in an Kittitian restaurant or you are visiting Saint Kitts and Nevis, I recommend the following:

1. Johnny Cakes

They are made from flour, yeast, sugar, salt and other basic ingredients and are formed into small circles that are fried in hot oil. No one can eat just one of these golden cakes, so don’t even try.

2. Conch Fritters

They’re made of succulent conch meat fried in seasoned batter. These hearty treats have a devoted following, particularly in the Caribbean. They make an excellent snack or starter for a large meal.

3. Banana Daiquiri

A variation on the classic Cuban drink, the banana daiquiri is a popular alternative. This version incorporates bananas into the original recipe, adding twice as much fruit, which really brings out the delicious creaminess. This is the perfect cocktail for a hot summer day. The taste is sweet and refreshing.

4. Lobster

Although lobsters may be considered a luxury in many parts of the world, in the waters around St. Kitts and can be found in one form or another on the menu of almost every restaurant, from the most beautiful restaurants to pristine beaches. Lobsters are abundant in the waters around St. Kitts so they appear on many menus. Arthur’s Sprat Net Restaurant and Marriott Blue Seafood or Blue Seafood are some of the best places to try this island delicacy.

5. Pelau

It consists of a tasty mixture of multiple meats such as beef, salted fish, beef and pork tail. It also contains rice, peas and a variety of vegetables.

6. Sugar Cake

It is made with a combination of sugar, coconut and ginger and is dyed in various colours, including pink and brown, making it festive and delicious. Hard on the outside, soft on the inside, this sweet treat is addictive.

7. Black Pudding

Recipes for black pudding vary, but most contain a significant amount of pig’s blood, pork fat and other pieces of pork, as well as other ingredients, including strong seasonings. The mixture is placed inside casings and cooked.

8. Goat Water

This is a goat stew that is highly prized throughout the Caribbean. In addition to the goat, the stew requires water, of course, as well as papaya, onion, yam, chilli, tomato and other fresh local ingredients.

9. Salt Fish and Dumplings

Fish is soaked and cooked, then slowly braised with onions, garlic and tomatoes. Other dishes include meals coated with chilli and briefly fried, and boiled dumplings made from flour and shredded coconut. Jacqueline Ryan’s invention of salted fish stew with spiced plantains, coconut balls and spiced breadfruit was declared a winner and is now considered the country’s national dish thanks to local ingredients and techniques as the perfect embodiment.

10. Roti

It is an unleavened flatbread that comes with a variety of fillings. You can find Roti stuffed with vegetable curry, chicken or shrimp. It makes an excellent lunch or snack and can be found in Basseterre, Cockleshell Beach and other popular places.
