The following highlights some of the popular Traditional Honduran Foods. If you manage to be in an Honduran restaurant or you are visiting Hondura, I recommend the following:
2. Sopa Marinera
Sopa marinera is a delicious and traditional dish, prepared in the coastal areas of Honduras. It is thanks to the great quality of its seafood that its preparation has become very famous in many other parts of the country. Some of the seafood that can be included in this delicious soup are: conch, crab, shrimp, fish fillet, octopus, mussels and any other seafood of your preference. The rich broth of the soup can be accompanied with white rice, small slices or cooked green banana. You can also add a green salad or sweet and sour spring salad.
3. Sopa de Caracol
A creamy and tasty soup that could not be more tropical. Snail soup is a specialty of the Caribbean coast of Honduras. In fact, snail soup is one of the must-try dishes if you visit the Honduran coast. The broth of this magnificent soup is made with coconut milk, seafood broth, ginger and cilantro, and inside is a variety of vegetables such as plantain and yuca. It is accompanied by rice and corn tortillas. Despite its name, it is not prepared with snails. Although it is a hot soup, this typical Honduran meal is usually eaten on summer afternoons at the beach.
4. Tapado de Pescado
Although tapado de pescado is prepared in several countries, in Honduras it is a typical meal. To prepare it, first a broth is made with water, onion, sweet chilli, garlic and cilantro and yuca, green plantain, sweet potatoes, bananas and ripe plantain are added. Everything is cooked until the vegetables soften. Check the seasoning and if necessary, add a little salt and some more water if the broth has evaporated. Then add the fish, making sure it has no bones, and serve it hot with drops of lemon juice and chopped coriander on top.
6. Baleada
Honduran baleadas are by far the number one typical Honduran food, the one you can’t miss in Honduras. Baleadas are a classic favourite that never goes out of style and will have you asking for more. They consist of refried beans, butter (Honduran style sour cream), cheese, avocado, scrambled eggs and sometimes chorizo or steak, all enclosed in handmade flour tortillas.
7. Horchata
Horchata is a very popular drink in several Latin American countries, and each country has its own unique way of preparing it. In Honduras, however, horchata is made with ground rice and many spices, such as cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. It is best served over ice and enjoyed all year round.
8. Pan de Coco
Traditional Honduran coconut bread is made with coconut milk extracted from fresh coconuts. These bread rolls are typically made in wood-fired ovens. It is worth noting that coconut bread contains some benefits, since this fruit alone contains multiple properties. While hot, they are spread with butter, margarine or jam and accompanied with a good cup of coffee. Undoubtedly a Honduran delicacy.
9. Pescado Frito de Yojoa
A dish consisting of fried whole fish seasoned with salt and pepper. Before it is dredged in flour as a breading. Slices of green plantain cut in slices are prepared and fried. They are flattened or crushed and put back into the fryer. To complete the dish, a lettuce salad and a side dish known as wedding (beans cooked with rice) are prepared. At the moment of serving, the fish is placed on a banana leaf, surrounded by the slices and the wedding and the salad are placed on the sides.
10. Rosquillas
These doughnuts are made from a tortilla dough prepared in advance, to which curd, dry white cheese, egg, salt and pepper to taste are added. This mixture is used to make donut-shaped doughnuts that are fried in butter or baked if a healthier dish is desired. Doughnuts are an accompaniment to savoury dishes, but if you pour honey on them, they become a sweet dessert.
