TOP 10 Traditional Gabonese Foods

The following highlights some of the popular Traditional Gabonese Foods. If you manage to be in an Gabonese restaurant or you are visiting Gabon, I recommend the following

1. Seafood

Throughout Ghana, but especially in the coastal areas, there is a wide variety of seafood to enjoy. Fish is a speciality as are the ‘chiringuitos’ (beach bars).

2. Brochettes

Also called Kyinkyinga. This popular Ghanaian kebab is similar to the most common in Africa, suya, a spicy kebab eaten with peanut or pepper sauces, which is very common in African street cooking.

3. Nyembwé

It is a very popular sauce in Gabonese cuisine, made from the paste by processing (crushing and cooking) the palm kernel with onion and garlic.

4. Mustard Chicken with garlic

Gabonese food is often very spicy. Although mustard chicken is not an authentic Gabonese recipe, this French-inspired dish is highly revered in Gabon. The people of Gabon can eat this dish in their daily meals as it requires little effort to prepare.

5. Beignets

Also known as ‘bofrot’ or ‘puff puff’ they consist of a fried and spongy dough, similar to a doughnut, they can also be made by dipping some fruit in dough that will be later fried to give it that special touch.

6. Baked Bananas

It is an African coconut and banana baked dish, typical to start the day. It can be cooked with or without the shell. There is also a less common cooking method which is grilled where all the ingredients are marinated before grilling.

7. Meat Stews

This stew usually made with beef and other meats is usually eaten with rice and is a homemade Ghanaian dish. This takes a while to prepare, but is worth the wait.

8. Plantain Fritters

Macho plantain fritters are a snack made with ripe plantains and all-purpose flour. It has a surprisingly light interior with a crispy crunch from the addition of the flour.

9. Gari

It is a typical African stew from Ghana. It is an extraordinarily healthy dish. It is made from fresh cassava, or the cassava plant. This food is made up of dried cassava that is fried and oiled.

10. Fufu

It is a mass of cassava and green plantain in different parts of Central and West Africa, although its origin is in Ghana, specifically among the Asante people.
