TOP 10 Traditional Falkland Islander Foods

The following highlights some of the popular Traditional Falkland Islander Foods. If you manage to be in an Falkland Islander restaurant or you are visiting Falkland Island, I recommend the following:

1. Lamb

The Falkland Islands are renowned for the organic meat grown on the plains of the islands. Lamb dishes are particularly notable, highly sought after and delicious and are almost always served with fresh local or seasonal vegetables.

2. Mullet

It is a reddish-bodied fish with pinkish flesh, which can measure up to 45 cm long and weigh up to two kilograms. The fish owes its rich, sweet flavour to its seafood diet, and is known for its firm, fleshy and buttery texture. It is a rare fish with a high commercial value and is sold in many fish restaurants and supermarkets.

3. Sea Trout

As an island nation, seafood is naturally popular and of high quality. Dishes often include clams, oysters, scallops and snow crab. Favourite fish, such as turbot and rockfish, are often grilled with potatoes or steamed vegetables.

4. Smoko

The term is believed to have originally come from the British merchant navy as early as 1865 in reference to a cigarette break. However, in the Falkland Islands, it is an afternoon tea served with homemade cakes and biscuits.
