TOP 10 Traditional Andorran Foods

The following highlights some of the popular Traditional Andorran Foods. If you manage to be in an Andorran restaurant or you are visiting Andorra, I recommend the following:

1. Cannelloni Andorrana

Cannelloni is a traditional Andorran dish that is served especially at Christmas time. To be more specific, it is one of those dishes that are usually served the day after Christmas, as they are usually prepared with leftover turkey from the previous day. The Andorran version of cannelloni mixes minced lamb, pork and chicken with a white béchamel sauce.

2. Embotits

Sausages include different types of Andorran sausages, hams and black puddings. They can be found on almost every Andorra table and are consumed all year round. Some of the most typical types to consider are longaniza, donja, bisbe and black pudding.

3. Escudella

Escudella is known as Andorra’s national dish. It is typically eaten in winter and on holidays, including Christmas. It is a large and hearty stew, and a favourite of meat lovers. It contains ingredients such as chicken, veal, meatballs, pig’s snout and feet and butifarra sausage. It also has potatoes, cabbage and white beans or chickpeas. Typically large pasta shells are also added.

4. Andorran Trout

Andorra has no coastline, so seafood is not common here, but it has many rivers full of freshwater trout. Andorran-style trout is cooked, roasted and wrapped in ham.

5. Coca Massegada

Cocas are an appetiser or dessert eaten throughout Catalonia and Andorra. They can be sweet or savoury. One of the most traditional is the sweet one, which is eaten on special occasions such as the festival of the Nit de Sant Joan on 23 June. It consists of a flat oval sweet bread covered with candied nuts and almonds. Some versions also contain streaks of creamy custard.

6. Chicory Salad

This is one of the dishes of Andorran cuisine that you can find in the most diverse presentations, and all of them are simply delicious. Depending on the region of this country you visit, you may find it seasoned with one or other ingredients. Its main ingredient, as its name suggests, is red chicory, and this can be accompanied by fruits such as mandarin oranges, and even walnuts, pistachios, almonds or cashew nuts.

7. Andorran Cream

The French have crème brûlée, the Catalans have crème catalana and the Andorrans have crème andorran. It is similar to the other two, as it is a kind of creamy, custard-like dessert, but instead of the burnt sugar on top, it is accompanied by freshly made whipped cream.

8. Cargols

The dish is made with land snails, which are cooked in a kind of large tin and accompanied by a spicy sauce. This is a very traditional dish in both Catalonia and Andorra, and one of the dishes you can’t miss if you happen to be in Andorra and want to enjoy its gastronomy to the full.

9. Cunillo

Cunillo literally means ‘rabbit’. It is cooked in a variety of ways in Andorra, but most commonly it is stewed in a rich tomato sauce with onion and white wine. Rabbit with tomato sauce is undoubtedly one of the best dishes of traditional Andorra food, as it brings together many of the best ingredients of Andorran cuisine.

10. Trinxat

This dish is Andorra’s answer to the British Bubble and Squeak, and is a mixture of mashed potatoes, cabbage and leeks. The ingredients are fried with cubes of bacon or pork fat. The trinxat is usually topped with chicory leaves and a poached egg.
