Activity/Place Highlights

You can not leave without visiting at least 5 haciendas in this incredible place. Do not forget to try pulque, a fermented juice from the traditional maguey of Tlaxcala; in most haciendas, they produce it, in addition to demonstrations and tastings. The best holidays await you in Tlaxcala, to fill you with a wonderful culture.

Most of the haciendas that were abandoned have been restored and now function as halls for large events with immense gardens and as inns, in addition to offering first class accommodation, it is also the perfect place to taste the traditional local cuisine with herbs and wild mushrooms.

Hacienda Soltepec

In this wonderful place with something unusual architecture, you can take a horseback ride through the immense field full of beautiful wildflowers and abundant snowy peaks. Currently in this hacienda founded in 1717, is the hotel “La Escondida”. It´s named for the movie, which was filmed in his helmet, starring Maria Felix. It also has a spa, gym, pool, tennis courts and other services. It is a place that tells you it’s great ancient history but the most important thing is that you still enjoy the comforts of today.

Hacienda de Atlangatepec

It is common to see large fields and gardens in some haciendas. Some others raise fighting bulls because this is a tradition in Tlaxcala. In this hacienda that is only 38 kilometers away by car from Soltepec, you can take lessons in bullfighting for beginners, as well as attend local bullfights.

How to get there

Located just 2 hours east of busy Ciudad de Mexico, you can find Tlaxcala, which despite being the smallest state in Mexico, the greatness of its historical and cultural value will leave you stunned. Tour all the tourist properties that this region offers you.

First of all, take a plane from anywhere in the world to Mexico City, if you travel by car you should only take the highway 150 Mexico-Puebla and then take Highway 117, which will take you to Tlaxcala in just 2 hours. If you travel by bus from Mexico City, you must go to the bus station, there are 2 lines that travel to Tlaxcala, leaving from 5 am every 20 minutes throughout the day.

When to Go

The temperate climate makes Tlaxcala a year-round destination. The mid-August festival of Asunción brings flower carpets, also fiestas to the city of Tlaxcala and the running of the bulls through the streets of Huamantla.

How to Find lt

There are frequent buses between Mexico City and Tlaxcala (2 hours). Huamantla is 16 miles (26 km) from Tlaxcala. Begin the route at Hacienda Soltepec 3 miles (4.8 km) from Huamantla.

Opening and Closing Hours

If you travel alone, you can visit the haciendas from Monday to Sunday, since most of them function as inns, however, there are several travel agencies and tour guides that offer packages for tours of several haciendas, from Monday to Sunday, between 5 and 10 hours (full day).

Planning

The hacienda route is flexible with options for day trips, regional dining, or overnight stays. You also have the option of the one-day tours, which offer tastings in each of the haciendas and different activities along the route. You can rent a car or hire a guide/driver at the tourism office in Tlaxcala. This is one block northeast of the plaza at Juarez and Lardizabal avenues.

It’s very important and advisable to bring comfortable clothes and footwear, sunscreen, hat, camera, also a little extra money for personal expenses.

History

Known as the world of Spanish ranchers, Tlaxcala is covered with extensive ranches and fields of maguey and the famous cactus nopal. They also own the popular haciendas, the gold of the state for 300 years.

For many years these imposing haciendas have belonged to families and their descendants, although some haciendas are already collapsed or abandoned, there are still some of them that remain as a tourist place due to the historical value and still belong to the same original families, there is no doubt that they will open their doors and tell you all their history.
