Things to do

Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness

Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness is the largest desert in the National Forest, will undoubtedly give you the best outdoor experiences. This is considered an Idaho treasure, due to its virgin forests, deep canyons, wildflower meadows, and its immense grounds. This place is so well maintained and preserved because there is no access to vehicles, you can only walk or take a horse ride. In addition, you can enjoy many trails with stunning landscapes. It is the ideal place to spend a few days disconnected. You don’t see many people in the area, so enjoy the solitude.

Salmon River

This river is a bit murky and with some eddies, so it is best to be careful. This gigantic river dominates the desert. Previously, it was practically impossible to go upstream, that’s why the desert is named after it because there was no return. However, currently, several boats manage to climb the river, despite its rapids. This river is really a must-see show, so enjoy it to the fullest.

You can spend a pleasant afternoon fishing or go kayaking. The rainbow trout and the killer are in the river all the year, while in spring and summer steel trout and Chinook salmon are seen. In addition, if you hire a guided experience, you can learn all about the history of the river in a fun and unforgettable expedition.

Salmon River Canyon

No doubt, you will be surprised to learn that Salmon River Canyon is even deeper than the Grand Canyon. Compared to the characteristic steep walls of the Grand Canyon, this is solitaries, forested ridges, towers, cliffs, large eroded monuments and their unparalleled variety of landscapes that are visible from the river, which in turn rise in an incredible way to the sky. A visit to this canyon will leave you breathless.

Wildlife

In addition to admiring a wide variety of wildflowers throughout the desert, it is also possible for you to run into sheep and mountain goats, as well as the moose that inhabit the forest and on the low slopes. We cannot forget predators, such as mountain lions, coyotes and wolves. On the other hand, there are also black bears but don’t worry, they usually avoid people. If you are looking for something completely isolated, there are about 6 thousand square kilometers without trails, totally isolated areas.

This amazing dessert is named after Senator and lawyer Frank Church. Frank introduced legislation to protect the area in 1964. By 1968 he created the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, which included the Salmon River.
