Snorkeling is a favorite activity among tourists and locals alike. Hirizo Beach is less crowded during weekdays. Make sure you bring your own food and drinks, as well as a tent; tourism isn’t developed in the area, so there are no facilities available.

The Suishohama Beach Resort is located in Takenami, on the Fukui Prefecture, in central Honshu. The water is crystal clear and perfect for snorkeling, but it gets deep quickly; be careful. You can find some places to buy food and some others to rent tents and inflatables, buy sunscreen, etc. During the summer, it can get very crowded; the entrance is free but there is a parking fee.

The crystal clear water is perfect for snorkeling, with many different fish species and other sea creatures. There is store at the parking lot, but no restaurants or places to stay nearby. The beach is mostly frequented by locals, and rarely gets crowded or busy.

Jodogahama Beach is located in Miyako, to the north-east of the main island Honshu. This lovely beach is almost always empty, offering beautiful views and a peaceful atmosphere. There’s a beach restaurant with a typical Japanese menu, but still totally worth trying. You can take a boat ride to get close to the rock formations or hike the trails around the beach. There are many seagulls on the shore, but avoid feeding them; be careful of the rocks, and bring swim shoes.
