Things to do

Blue hole

There are many reasons and attractions why the reef is known. However, Blue Holes is one of the main and most memorable experiences you can live in this place. Many people are curious to dive into this huge circular gap of 125 meters deep, in the center of the Lighthouse Reef system. Certainly, this place is considered one of the best dive sites in the world. Although it has a great depth, visibility underwater allows you to admire a wonderful world.

You will be able to admire large corals, limestone, different species of fish and, the deeper you dive, the darkness goes on being present but at the same time bright colors are visible. In addition, you can also see sharks from the Caribbean reef in the distance. To do this diving, you must have some preparation, it is not something for everyone.

Half Moon Cay Wall

The shallow waters of Belize include places with an even richer marine life, such as the magnificent Half Moon Cay Wall, a virgin crescent-shaped island. Many expert divers claim that this is the perfect place to admire marine life. This is due to the magnificent encounters with wildlife, the great and beautiful corals and the mild conditions.

You must be very aware of the depth control, because the sunlight reaches even 30 meters. In addition, you will encounter natural coral tunnels, in which you can swim in peace, avoiding the thousands of yellow, green and neon blue fish.

South Water Caye Marine Reserve

This is the largest marine reserve in Belize, it also includes the Man of War Caye reserve, where you can find the brown booby and the frigate. It is the perfect place for snorkeling and diving. On the other hand, you can also easily admire different types of marine animals, such as turtles, seahorses, rays and brunettes. The route goes between interspersed walls with sand channels and stretch marks and grooves.

Dive with whale sharks

Every year hundreds of divers and tourists visit this paradise to live one of the greatest experiences of their life, dive alongside the largest cartilaginous fish in the world. The fabulous reserve Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes, allow during the months of March to June to live this incredible moment. Despite its large size, it has a very gentle nature. In addition, you will be surrounded by professionals and experts in the area, so just enjoy without worrying.

How to get there

The city closest to the reef system is Belize City. From there you can take a ferry, 45 minutes to Caye Caulker, in San Pedro. On the other hand, you can also take a 15-minute flight from the Belize City Municipal International Airport (TZA) to San Pedro Airport (SPR) and then a ferry to Caye Caulker. All ferries leave every 3 hours, approximately. In addition, you can reach other islands by boat from Belize City or San Pedro.

When to go

November to June. Between July and October wind and rain may impair diving conditions.

How long do I go for

A minimum of one week stay is recommended to take the best experiences.

Opening and Closing Hours

There is no exact time to dive, the waters always with quality and perfect for diving. You can dive both day and night, depending on the tour and the activities you choose.

Planning

It is very common that most visitors stay at the main dive centers, the Belize Barrier Reef, Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, because they are close to famous places like the Blue Hole. However, Hopkins and Placencia are also popular. For day trips, travelers stay at some resorts in the inland jungle, although road trips are a few long. Remember to make your reservation well in advance due to tourist demand. On the other hand, it is not necessary that you carry your diving equipment, there you find everything you need.

Inside Information

The depths of Blue Lagoon are well beyond the reach of expert divers. No doubt, good underwater skills and self-discipline are required even at lower depths, with a real risk of nitrogen narcosis, a state similar to alcohol intoxication. Certainly, if you are not an expert, always be aware of the indications of the guides and report any problems.

History

It is estimated that this place began to form even before the existence of man, 500 million years ago. Without a doubt, it is one of the largest reefs in the Caribbean Sea and the second largest reef system in the world. In addition, it is considered the most important tourist destination in Belize, as it attracts thousands of tourists every year. Similarly, it is of great importance for the fishing industry. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1996.

Other Nearby Attractions

Glover Atoll

Formed by 6 islets surrounded by a blue sea that seems infinite, Glover Atoll looks like a necklace of sand pearls. This belongs to the 3 great Atolls of Belize, however, it is the one that receives the least visits. Thanks to this, this place is one of the most virgin and incredible places in Belize. Its location is perfect for kayaking between its islands and the shallow central lagoon. You cannot miss admiring through its crystalline waters, the hundreds of marine animals and colors that nature gives you.

Snail

Arriving on the mainland, towards the border with Guatemala, you can find the largest Mayan settlement in the country. Surrounded by an immense jungle, 84 kilometers south of San Ignacio, you will discover a variety of centers, temples, palaces and artisan workshops, which at the time had the same importance as Tikal. Here you can admire the tallest building in Belize, the Caana (palace of heaven), about 42 meters high.

Jungles

Belize has other natural wonders besides the reefs. If you are looking for something different and away from civilization, you can opt for the Mayflower Bocawina National Park or the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. In these places you can enjoy the jungle, mountains, waterfalls and swim in wells of crystal clear water. In addition, you can also admire different wild animals such as monkeys, reptiles, mammals, among others. Don’t forget to visit the most famous Jaguar sanctuary in the country, in Cockscomb Basin.
