Surfing in Hawaii – Kaua’i Island, Hawaii is a great way to surf on the incredible waves in Hawaii, a dream every surfer wants to fulfil. Feel the wind caressing your face, as the drops of water fall on you while you slide on your board on the magnificent Pacific ocean, the adrenaline of seeing a great wave and the courage to go riding it. It’s your chance to connect with the ocean.

Hawaii has in its magnificent nature the highest, cleanest waves that exist. Every year, thousands of people visit the place to admire this beauty, but mostly to learn and practice what they are passionate about: surfing. There is no better place to practice than Hawaii, both for amateurs and professionals.

Start surfing

One of the places where you can learn this art is in Kaua’i, the “Island of the Garden” of Hawaii. Lesson number one: you must always have a lot of energy and take the time to paddle until you reach the line where the waves start to break; more energy than what you need to ride your surfboard back to the shore. Are you ready for this? Then you only need the desire and a couple of hours to learn the basics.

You can also learn about surfing at Po’ipu Beach, on the southern coast of Hawaii’s Kaua’i Island, which is littered with schools lead by retired surf professionals. On these schools, you will learn how to read the waves and balance yourself on the board as you ride, but most importantly, you will learn how to slow down at the end of the trip, so make sure you pay attention to every detail!

After one or two weeks of practicing all the lessons on Poi’pu’s 1.2-meter waves, surely you’ll be ready for something more daring than that.

You can not leave without making the journey to Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, O’ahu; in this place, the great Elvis was amused. Here, you will take your next step in your surfing-learning adventure, so you should be equipped with your board, along with shorts and all the necessary gear.

Walk the northern coast of the legendary O’Haula, where you will find many professional surfers fighting with huge waves in Waimea Bay. From the sand, you will want to follow their steps and ask if you are ready to “hang ten”, that is, run at full speed with your toes hooked on the nose of the board. Breathing deeply, put your board under of your arm and start to surf!

When to Go

Any time of the year is perfect, but the water is warmest in summer. Winter storms in the North Pacific generate the biggest surf, but you’ll need a wetsuit in December or January.

How Long Most

Introductory surf classes last a couple of hours. Beginners will need a week or two of daily classes before they can take on the waves with confidence and panache.

Planning

Surf schools provide everything you need: basically, a board and “leash” to wrap around one ankle. If you get hooked, there are dozens of shops where you can purchase your own board and accessories. Inside Information Garden Island Surf School meets daily at Po’ipu Beach. Lessons include an hour with an instructor and an hour of individual practice to perfect what you’ve learned.
