Activity/Place Highlights

Begin your journey by an unpaved road, a series of curves show you a landscape that alternates between large dense and deep forests. You can also observe high mountainous mountain ranges. Without a doubt, these will leave you impacted with the panoramic view of the snowy peaks until the summer days. In addition, you can see streams, rivers and beautiful lakes.

With all the incredible landscapes you will find, you will want to make the regular stops of the trip. So you can admire the abundant wildlife that exists in the place. In addition, you will encounter wolves, deer, porcupines, foxes, lynxes, bald eagles, moose, as well as caribou and black bears. It is your moment to photograph these wonderful species.

Halfway there, you’ll want to take a break and what better to do on the coast of scenic Lake Tranquilo. Here you can also practice canoeing, fishing, walking and even camping. Also, absorb all the peace and tranquility that this place emanates.

Continue on the newly opened bridge of the Rose River, since, in 2008 due to the spring torrents, the bridge fell. On the other hand, you can skirt the river and reach the lakes of Lapie, known and famous for the trout that is found in its cold and crystalline waters. If you wish, you can also continue to the beautiful Lapie River Canyon to reach the settlement on the Ross River.

How to get there

Take a flight from anywhere in the world to Toronto, the capital of Canada and then another flight to Whitehorse. Also, you can take a direct flight to the Whitehorse International Airport in Yukon, and thus make the shortest crossing. You can drive or take a tourist bus. Head north, about 230 miles from Johnson’s Crossing, onto South Canol Road.

When to go

Summers are short, so plan your trip between mid-June and the end of August.

How long

Johnson’s Crossing is an 80-mile (129 km) route east of Whitehorse, where you can rent a 4WD. You can return from the Ross River to Whitehorse on the Robert Campbell Highway. It is a 253-mile (407 km) journey through Carmacks or a 506-mile (814 km) trip through Lake Watson.

Opening and closing hours

The place is closed during the winter, however, you can visit it in any other season. The road will only take you around 4 hours if everything is clear. If the weather is humid, it is better to avoid such large vehicles.

Planning

South Canol Road can be driven in a day, however, be prepared for weather conditions, as they can hinder your schedule. It may be hot, but snow on elevated sections of the road, even in July, is not uncommon. At Johnson’s Crossing, you will find a gas station, a bakery, plus a small trailer park. On the other hand, while on the Ross River there is a grocery store and even a hotel, there are also some basic camps en route.

Inside Information

It will go a long way, through which you will not have services until the Ross River. It is advisable to take the trip:

  • Extra gasoline in case your tank runs out
  • Additional spare parts in case of an emergency.
  • Food and drinking water

Also, it is important to be careful because the road is a bit narrow and you may find one or two potholes.

History

Many years ago, after the Second World War, the United States Army built a highway to transport oil from the Mackenzie River to Whitehorse. This project was abandoned and the Government of Canada is currently responsible for this path. Also, during the tour, you can see relics left by the war, chariots of war, among other wonders on the road.

You can not miss this amazing place, declared as a National Historic Site on Canol Road. Enjoy all the landscapes offered by each stop. Among the signs full of the history of its origin and construction, nature, wildlife, and many more surprises.
