San people’s history

At first, you’ll be taught about San People’s life as you walk through this incredible corridors. These people lived in the area for a thousand years. Later, you’ll learn the debate about the age of the rock art. Also, this is the perfect treat for history buffs and nature lovers by walking the trail. Besides, you’ll see the home of springbok, eland, dassies, and more bird species.

The art sites

You’ll be able to appreciate the incredible historical dawings when you get inside the cave. At first, the white-painted boot-prints will show you the following way. Then, you’ll see images that appear to have been painted on top of older images. Over there, you’ll learn how dating the painting is a challenge. Also, there’ll be paintings depict scenes of daily life and San people’s animals.

Indigenous reed-like grass

After watching the dancing figures adorning the flat cave wall, you’ll find random daubs of paints in your way. Besides, you’ll learn how the Sans artist used the indigenous red-like grass. In fact, that was the tool of the trade used for their art. Finally, you’ll be able to explore approximately 2,500 rock paintings scattered throughout the Cederberg.

How to get there

There are two main ways to get to Sevilla Rock Art trail in District R364 from Capetown Airport (CPT):

  • By drive: you have the option of renting a car at the airport. Then, you’ll drive for 2hours and 57-minutes to R364 West Coast DC. It has a price of $24 to 40 USD.
  • By shuttle: take your shuttle at the airport. it is a 2h and 57-minute journey of $17 to 85 USD.

When to go

Each season has a special gift in this place. For example, in spring you can see the annual blaze of famous wildflowers. Also, perhaps winters are quite wet, you can enjoy its special beauty. 

How long

To explore these incredible pieces of art you better stay at least 2 or 3 days.

Planning

To be in this place you must buy a permit and get a free mat. You can also buy a booklet for detailed information. In the same way, you can buy a guide at Travelers Lodge with a ticket. This will give you the route and different explanations. 

Also, if you want to hike you need a permit. You can find permits, trail maps and guide booklets at Traveller’s Rest Farm. Besides, you’ll find self-catering accommodations there which should be booked in advance.

Inside Information

It is important to know that there are 9 rocks, from five to seven you’ll have the greatest view of the location. Besides it is easy to find the path with the art fairly easy to spot at most of the sites.

Remember to take with you your good walking shoes so you can truly explore the place. Also, take water for the long trip.

History

The San People who live in this Rock Art Trail word were nomadic hunter-gatherers. In fact, they lived here before de Europeans arrived. Also, they left more than 2,500 rock paintings in the Cederberg region besides the Sevilla Rock Art Trail.

This place has around 800 and 8,000 years old. Also, you could feel its otherworldliness even before you reach the site. Besides, some sandstone formations have been formed over the centuries by the action of wind and sand.

If you are a lover of history, you’ll have this amazing place to visit. Over there, it is possible to have an insight into the creation of Clanwilliam. Also, you’ll learn about how the struggles and the settler were part of the creation of this community.  Besides, you’ll see an amazing Van Gogh Quilting exhibition to have the artistic part of history.

Clanwilliam Dam

For those lovers of waterskiing, this is the perfect place. Over there, you’ll just need to rent a chalet or camp near the water’s edge. In the same way, it is possible to ski or walks the nearby Ramskop Nature Reserve trail. This is an amazing place to experience the richness of the indigenous flora.
