Restaurants, bars, hotels, shops, and extensive walking paths fill with life this beautiful place and its surroundings. After an hour and a half of traveling in a ferry through this peaceful archipelago, the island of Sandhamn appears into your view. Around the end of the 19th century, Sandham became popular for its artists and writers, who found their inspiration in the natural beauty of this place. This island has for so long been one of Sweden’s main sailing centers, with regattas held here since the late 1890s; and nowadays, during the highest peak of the summer season, the harbor is full of boats.

There are just a handful of cars because people prefer walking or biking along the island’s sandy paths, creating a relaxed atmosphere out of it. In the charming town center, there are some pastel-colored, wooden cottages, and small seafront cafés. Also, just a short stroll away, you will see that there is a shady, unfrequented pine forest that hides a white-sand beach, with irresistible waters that tempt you to swim in them. The more you spend getting to know this island, the more you appreciate the fact that this place is one of Sweden’s best-kept secrets.

When to go?

Although Sandhamn is one of those islands that you can visit in any season, we highly recommend you to go during the summer season because that’s when it brings sunny skies and warm weather. Also, just in case, you should bring an umbrella, a raincoat, and an extra layer of clothing; it’s always better to be prepared than regret later.

How to find it?

From Stockholm, you can take a ferry from companies like Waxholmsbolaget and Cinderella. With Waxholmsbolaget you can also take the Båtluffarkort, which is a special five-day island-hopping card, but this package is only available during summer. This is another reason why it’s better to go in summer rather than in the other seasons.

Planning

There’s only one hotel on the whole island, the Seglarhotellet. This hotel includes a wide range of facilities including a restaurant, bar, pool, hot tub, and fitness rooms.
