Prague Astronomical Clock

Address: Staroměstské nám. 1, 110 00 Prague 1, Josefov.

Opening and Closing Hours: from 9 AM to 10 PM everyday, except for Mondays when opening time is at 11 AM.

Also known as the Prague Orloj, this astronomical clock is more than 600 years old and it’s mounted on the Old Town Hall. Its beautiful blue, black and gold paint cover only makes the very start of its magic, because this clock gives you more than just the date and time. Besides tracing astronomical movements, this clock also represents the glorious dance between life and death, making you feel that every day is a true blessing.

Cost: General adult tickets cost pass $10 USD. You can also get special mobile tickets for less than the average ticket and avoid lines.

Church of the Mother of God before Týn

Address: Staroměstské nám. 604, 110 00 Prague 1, Staré Město.

Opening and Closing Hours: depends on the mass service.

The Church of the Mother of God is the queen of all buildings in Prague’s Old Town Square. From the beginning, you’ll be blown away  by its exquisite and its 80 m high twin towers. And, packed with its original furniture, this religion destination holds incredible Virgin Mary paintings, famous tombs and Catholic symbols from the 14th century. St. Nicholas Church

Opening and Closing Hours: from 9 AM to 4 PM.

Unlike the previous church, St. Nicholas Church is a Hussite religious site completed in 1737. Nevertheless, its beauty is remarkable. Painted in white inside out, this church will make you believe beauty truly can go beyond any barrier. From the beginning, the columns on the entrance, the golden details and the unbelievable chandelier on the inside will definitely make you break the silence code.

Jan Hus Memorial

Address: Staroměstské náměstí, Prague 1, Staré Město.

Opening and Closing Hours: never closed.

The Jan Hus Memorial is located right in front of St. Nicholas Church. It was built in 1915 to remember the life and death of this man. For that, the memorial is the perfect place to take a rest or to look out for some inspiration. There, you’ll learn that Jan Hus wasn’t just a religious reformer, because his ideas shaped religion, history, politics, power, and linguistics for all Czechs. Thus, his image will be forever linked with that of the country, its origins and its formation.

Charles Bridge

Address: Karlův most, Prague 1, Staré Město / Malá Strana.

Opening and Closing Hours: never closed.

The Charles Bridge stands over the Vltava River and it was completed in 1402. Its 500 meters walk is protected by the eyes of 30 saint statues and three land towers. Standing there, you’ll be fascinated by the city landscape, especially at night. Plus, the bridge is an obliged stop for all tourists even though it’s constantly crowded, but since it’s a walking path only there’s nothing to worry about.

Even though is far from Prague’s Old Town Square, Prague Zoo is definitely worth a visit. Holding over 4000 animals and 111 acres, the zoo’s mission is to protect and study over 600 species.

How to get to Prague Old Town

Václav Havel Prague International Airport is the closest airport to get to Prague’s Old Town Square. From there you catch a taxi, a bus or take the subway:

  • By taxi: it’s an 18 min ride that costs between $20-30 UD. Taxi vehicles are available outside the airport or you can call any of the following: Taxi-Prague, Taxi Praha, Prague Taxi, and Nejlevnější-Taxi.
  • By bus: it’s an 18 min ride that costs between $10-20 USD. This bus ride is part of a private service that departures from Terminál 1 at the airport. Bus rides depend on demand.
  • By subway: it’s a 32 min ride divided into two parts. First, you’ll have to take bus 119 at Terminál 1 at the airport. The ride is 17 min long and will leave you at Nádraží Veleslavín, Prague’s line A metro station. Once you are there, it takes 8 minutes to get to Staroměstská station. Get down, walk up 2 blocks, and you’ll be in Old Town Square.  Train tickets are up to $5 USD.

Entry requirements

By presenting your British citizen passport, you can stay in the Czech Republic up to 90 days. If you’re planning to stay any longer or to work during this time, you must request a Visa.

On the other hand, even if a no-deal Brexit takes place, trips shorter than 90 days shouldn’t be affected, as the Czech Republic is part of the Schengen Area. The only thing you need to have is a valid passport, with more than 6 months of validity to be able to travel abroad, and sufficient funds for your stance.

Local laws and customs

Czechs are one of the most reserved people out there, so don’t expect effusive greets. But say hello, thank you and goodbye as they are incredibly respectful. Also, note that drunken or offensive behavior can be condemned by law. Likewise, both Nazi and Communist debates tend to be sensitive topics here, to the point where performing a Nazi salute is titled as a crime. Save your questions for the History tours. 

In regard to local laws, crossing the streets through invalid paths can result in a fine or a sanction. Just like not having your ticket validated for public transportation. Furthermore, prostitution isn’t illegal yet it’s not regulated by the state, so it’s best to avoid this kind of activity. And remember that buying sexual services from minors is a felony. 

When it comes to drugs for personal use or recreation, marihuana isn’t illegal as long as you have under 15g in possession. Yet, you can be sanction by law representatives for it. Last but not least, same-sex unions aren’t illegal but tolerance levels in the Czech Republic aren’t very high sadly, so stay safe.

Money

The official currency in the Czech Republic is the Koruna (CZK), Koruny in the plural form. Even though some shops may accept Euros and VISA cards, exchanging the currency for cash is often the best option. Yet, be aware of exchanges houses as they tend to charge tourist rate, which tends to be significantly different from the commercial rate.

The best rates can be found through ATMs and many national banks, even though they charge commissions they tend to be smaller than in many tourist spots, airports, and exchange houses. For more information on where to do this transaction, contact your bank for international fees and valid ATMs abroad.

Tipping

Tipping is customary in tourist areas but might be seen as an act of rudeness for some local shop owners. In any case, tipping isn’t obliged but is a way to show appreciation for the service. 

  • Restaurants and food services: tipping in 5-star restaurants has a charge of 10% of your bill but isn’t included in it. So, don’t leave before making the full payment and don’t leave the money on the table. The waiter will come to collect the bill and the tip.
  • Taxi rides: there’s no need to tip on booked taxis, but you’re free to do so. For regular taxis, tips start at 20 CZK or $1 USD. Anyhow, the custom says you should round your bill.

Safety and Security

Before starting any trip, update yourself on the place you’re visiting. Your national Tourism or Foreign Office can provide you with this information. Plus, look out for your country’s embassy or consulate address and phone number in the said country and log it in on your mobile. In case something happens, the help you need it’s only one call away.

Crime

Pickpockets are one of the biggest threats to tourists in Prague, so always be attentive to your stuff and don’t carry too much money with you. Nevertheless, if your hotel provides a safety box, please use it and keep your money aside from your personal documents. If your passport gets stolen, you will need to contact your embassy and apply for an Emergency Travel Document. Anyway, having an online copy of these could save you hours of stress. 

Another common theft is robbery surrounding ATM machines, so it’s best to go accompanied to get cash. Some men or woman might pretend to be prostitutes to get closer to you and rob you, so avoid contact with them. On another note, fake police officers also exist, to avoid them remember that no officer can ask you to check your money. If you think you or someone else is being an object of this particular criminal act, you can call 158 or 112 to check the officer’s identity. 

For any of the above, you must reach the nearest police station and report the crime. You will be given a report number through which you’ll be updated. This said number can be given to your embassy or consulate representative for any following procedure.

Sexual Assault

Sexual assault has been highlighted in the public eye for months now and many safety measures have been shared to prevent it. The most commons are buying your own drinks and keeping an eye on them at all times, as many rape drugs can be poured into your glass. Always go partying with a partner, so you can keep an eye on each other. Don’t take anonymous taxi rides, instead, stick to your hotel transport options to be safer and trackable.

On the other hand, items as pepper spray and tasers are banned as luggage from and to the UK, yet the Czech Republic permits carrying these self-defense weapons freely. The only restriction is carrying them to court buildings, mass meetings or demonstrations. So, if you are in a vulnerable situation these could provide you with enough time to run off. But remember you must get rid of them before coming back to the UK.

Likewise, if you suspect you’re being followed by a stranger reach out to bigger crowds to lose him or her. Don’t go straight to your hotel, instead, change your route and report the situation to the nearest authority representative or office. Seek shelter there. 

Last but not least, if you happen to be a victim of sexual assault while abroad reach out for the nearest medical center to get help, both physical and mental. Plus, you must contact both local officers and your embassy or consulate representative to report the crime, and ask for instructions on how to proceed.

Terrorism

With a heightened alarm of terrorist attacks due to the political interventions in the Eastern hemisphere, nations, individuals, and groups linked to it could be possible targets. Even in the Czech Republic, where there’s no history of terrorist attacks. Since these events are usually indiscriminate, they could take place in touristic locations were locals, expatriates and foreigners meet. So, be attentive at all times as Czechia holds citizens from many nations.

If you happen to be caught up in one, seek refuge as soon as possible and report yourself to your nearest embassy, consulate or Foreign Office and ask for instructions on how to proceed.

Health

Thicks are common in Prague and tend to be present in city parks and gardens. These insects cling to your skin and feed off from your blood, some of them might carry Lyme disease or provoke Encephalitis too. To avoid being bitten, use a good insect repellent and dress properly when in these areas. You can get a vaccine to prevent the Encephalitis, but Lyme doesn’t count with a solution yet. If you happen to be bitten, reach out to a physician to get it removed as soon as possible.

Besides that, traveling can be a stressful activity especially if you suffer from an illness or if you happen to be injured. For that, we highly recommend you to carry an ERM medical kit and a health card with you. This card should include your blood type, allergies and any other condition that limits your basic functions. Plus, an emergency contact person always comes in hand, specifically for those who travel alone.

On the other hand, to get both prescribed and non-prescribed medicine you need to go to a pharmacy as grocery stores don’t have these products. Yet, if you take a particular medicine you must contact your embassy or Foreign Office to get the full information on its legal status in the Czech Republic. 

If your medicine happens to restricted, you will need to contact your prescriber to get a signed explanatory letter to be able to purchase it abroad. If it’s banned, on top of that you’ll need an export permit. In these cases, you will need to carry with you the required amount of medicine to cover your stance. This also applies if you can’t find information about the legal status of your medicine or its components. 

Finally, whether you’re traveling before or after the UK leaves the EU, it’s important to get a comprehensive travel insurance that includes cover for emergency medical treatment and other associated costs. The existing EHIC arrangements are not an alternative to travel insurance, as some health-related costs including medical repatriation, ongoing medical treatment, and non-urgent treatment, are not covered. History

Prague’s Old Town Square beauty shines even brighter next to the horror it involves. First, this public square saw the Czech resistance to Adolf Hitler’s Nazi invasion of the then Czechoslovakia; later, the Czech resistance to Soviet communism; and finally the restitution of democracy right from the Kinský Palace’s balcony.
