Old Tengger Volcano

History

It is the youngest of several volcanoes in the Tengger massif, besides being one of the most active in Java. When it erupts, it emits a thick, white and sulfurous smoke. Visits to Mount Bromo are generally discouraged when it is active. On the other hand, this is in the middle of a wide expanse of sandplain called the “sea of sand.” This barren terrain is also home to approximately 90,000 Tengger people, a Hindu ethnic minority in the predominantly Muslim Indonesian archipelago.

An interesting fact, every year, regardless of whether the mountain throws smoke and fire, hundreds of Tenggerese from nearby villages travel to the mountain. These make offerings of food, throwing it towards the caldera of the volcano.
