Messene, Greece, is that place that will leave you completely breathless with its impressive architecture. Located in the Peloponnese peninsula, you will be able to appreciate this majestic archaeological piece of Greece. Here, you will visit its later settlements. Also, you will love how this place has been preserved outstandingly. For those lovers of Roman history and culture, this is the ideal place.

Archeological Site

In this place, you will discover everything you need to do an incredible archaeological exploration. First, you will find the walls that have protected the settlement for nearly 500 years. You’ll also discover the various excavations that have been done since 1828. Then, you can see all the treasures that have been seeking to rebuild over the years. In the same way, you can delve into Greek culture and learn how people inhabited this place.

Messene Stadium

This will be the perfect place if you want to know how gladiators fought in the Roman era. There, you’ll see how the audience was placed in the battles, so close to the fighters that they could see their faces. You’ll also have the opportunity to sit on the king’s ancient throne and feel like you’re leading your battle.

Ancient Angora

If you’re a fan of Rome’s cultural history, you’ll love the remains of this theater. Initially, you will be able to admire the capacity of spectators that this place had. Also, you will appreciate that it has not been intervened by any modern construction. In this way, you can see how well you can envision the city in all of its glory. In the same way, you can get into the museum located directly next to the archeological site.

Messene Architecture

You must discover the curiosities of messianic architecture before your tour ends. As you explore it, you will discover all the details of its Hippodamian Style. Over there, your tour guide will tell you the story of Hippodamus, an ancient Greek architect and inventor of this city. Likewise, you’ll walk through the different labyrinths that didn’t allow foreigners to invade the city.

In the meantime, you will get to know these public spaces built around the city in an impeccable systematic and organized way. Everything in this place will have a symmetrical and orderly sense.

How to get there

There are two main ways to get to Messene from Kalamata Airport (KLX).

  • By Taxi: it is a 29-minute journey with a cost of $20 to 25 USD.
  • By Car: you can rent a car at the airport and drive to the Messene Stadium. It is a 29-minute journey of $3 to 5 USD.

When to go

This place is a perfect visit during the spring. So you can enjoy its beautiful wildflowers. 

How long

To be able to explore the place well and enjoy its secrets, allow at least three hours there.

This place is open from 8 am to 8 pm in the summer months.

Planning

You must bring extra cash because in this place you won’t be able to pay by card. They only accept payment in cash. To be in this place you don’t need to book in advance. 

Inside Information

You must be well informed about all the places you want to go. This archaeological site has very bad signage so you should read a lot about the old Messene before visiting.  And, when you’re there, take advantage of explaining each track and pathway. Despite the bad signage, you’ll find some information boards. 

To make your tour more enjoyable, remember to bring plenty of hydration, comfortable clothes and your best walking shoes. Also, remember something to protect you from the sun.

History

The origins of this city date back to 369 B.C. Thus, the ancient city of Messene was built by a combination of the army of the Thebes and their allies. Also, it was built by the Messenian exiles. Likewise, this place was built with the aim of protecting the territory from the Spartan domain.

With the passing of the years, the solidity of its fortifications surpassed all those of the Greek world. Later, this city was of great importance to the Romans. Today, you can find archaeological remains of schools, gymnasiums, benches and so on.

If you visit the messianic region, you can’t miss this magnificent walk. Right here, you can enjoy enchanting ruins and their exhibitions. At the same time, you will be able to visit museums where you will find impressive underwater discoveries and a lot of learning about the regions. Besides, you can learn about the wine and oil trade in the region. This place represents the perfect combination of the informative, the cultural and the artistic.
