The Mayan route is a wonderful journey in which you’ll get to travel four different countries. It begins in Mexico, through Guatemala and Belize and ends in Honduras. It’s main attractions are the ruins of the Mayan cities, where you can see the pyramids, the villages and one of the most amazing lakes in the world; however, you can also see years of history of Mayan culture, where even descendants and indigenous people of these communities continue to live. A few of the main cities in ruins that you cannot forget to visit are Palenque, Tikal and Copán.

It is the perfect opportunity to learn about a completely different culture from 1500 years ago. This route is a trip and an adventure created a bit recently, it was made with the purpose of making people travel and learn about the history of Mesoamerican culture, passing through 4 countries and absorbing experiences in each one. Since it is a new adventure, there are no defined maps. This trip can take you from a few days to even weeks.

You can start from wherever you want Palenque, in the south of Mexico, could be a good place to start, for example. In the tropical jungle of Chiapas, behind its beautiful mountains, you can find one of the most wonderful cities of the Mayan civilization. With a delicate and elegant decoration, a white tower representing the palace, undoubtedly exhibits one of the best architectures of the time.

You cannot travel without visiting one of the obligatory points, the colonial city of San Cristóbal de las Casas. It is still the center of the Mayan community in which women wear their traditional costumes, crafts are exhibited and culture is breathed. It is also necessary to travel around some villages to get to know the Mayan life in all its wonder.

Some of the most well-known or important cities back then are located in what is now known as northern Guatemala. Among these cities, you can know Tikal. This city is considered the New York City of the Mayan world. It is really worth visiting these cities and staying to watch the sunset over the rainforest.

To end this great adventure, head to the wonderful city of Copán in Honduras. Just as Tikal is considered the New York of the Mayan world, the beautiful Copán is Paris. This city has the most beautiful temples and magnificent stone sculptures.

Although they civilized the Maya and their structures and buildings were demolished in a mysterious way, its ruined cities still keep their essence and culture, even giving the warm feeling of living at the height of the time. It really is a trip that all adventurous travelers should take, you’ll get an unparalleled experience.
