Hukeng – Fujian, China

Hukeng, Fujian, China is an incredible, curious, fortress-like buildings pepper the landscape between Fujian and Jiangxi. With its multistory fortresses called Tulou, you’ll have and unbelievable experience. Also, with its different shapes stand on either side of the river along a narrow green valley, you’ll be amazed. If you’re a lover of Chinese history and culture, this is the perfect place for you.

Yongding Earth Building

This is the place to learn all about the traditional side of Hukkeng. There, you will be able to walk around the building and get to know its different areas. Outside, you will see its incredible round architecture. In the same way, its pleasant inside decoration will amaze you will be fascinated by the pleasant decoration inside will fascinate you. Also, you will learn about the history, construction, culture, and traditions of the people who inhabited these places.

Hakka Houses

Hakka houses will be that place that will leave you completely fascinated with its impressive construction and its incredible history. Besides, here you will be able to appreciate how exotic the Tulous apartments can be. In the same way, you will find a museum that will teach you about Chinese calligraphy. 

Outside, in the courtyards, you can see the familiar bronze statues as well as the way of life of the village. You will also tour the rooms that have been transformed into tents. Finally, you will be able to buy handcrafted souvenirs, caves or sweets to accompany your trip.

Hakka Culture Village of Yongding

Beyond the Hakka House, you will be able to know the incredible cultural village of China. Here you will find a completely different village to what you usually know with an incredible local heritage and a lot of history. Besides, you will be able to know some amazing places. For example, you can visit the castle as well as you can buy many local agricultural products. Finally, you will enjoy the particular local way of life and take beautiful pictures.

How to get there

There are three main ways to get to Hukeng from the Xiamen Airport (XMN).

  • By Bus: it is a 3hours and 11-minute journey. At first, you’ll take a taxi from the airport to the Xiamen Fanghu Bus Station. Then, the bus will take you to Yongding Tulou Bus Station. Over there, you’ll take one last taxi to Hukeng. You’ll spend around $14 to 16 USD.
  • By Train: after taking a taxi to Xiamen, you’ll take the train to Longshanzhen. Over there, you’ll grab another taxi to Hukeng. It is a 2hours and 42-minute trip. It has an estimated price of $42 to 56 USD.
  • By Taxi: it is a 2hours and 17-minute journey from the Airport to Hukeng. The price its around $50 to 65 USD.

When to go

The best time to visit this place is in spring and fall. Avoid going on summers because they are hot and humid. In the same way, if you go during the busy Chinese New Year you won’t enjoy your trip so much.

How long

To explore the amazing Fez from the Merenid tomb you can take around 2 or 3 days.

Opening and Closing Hours

The Hakka Houses are up to visits from Sunday to Saturday from 12:00 a.m to 11:59 p.m. You can also visit the village and the building at any time you like. 

Planning

Near Hukeng you can book simple places to stay. Also, you can stay with the Tulou residents with rooms for rent. Besides, you’ll find evening meals cooked over wood fires at modest amounts.
In this place, it is difficult to get written material in English, so it is important that you or some partner speak the native language.  

It is also important to book your place to stay and your tour guides in advance so you know exactly where to go once you get there. Also, you must get your visa. China requires a visa for most countries.

Inside Information

In this country, you must buy a VPN before entering. If you want to escape from your routine, you’ll have no problem. But to stay in touch with social media, you’ll need it.  Besides, you’ll need an outlet adaptor, the voltage in China is 220 V. 

History

The Tulous in China are some unique rural dwellings in the mountainous areas in Fujian. Originally, they were built between the 12th and the 20th centuries.

There are around 46 Fujian Toulou sites inscribed in 2008 by UNESCO as Wolrd Heritage Site. Besides, these traditional buildings show a particular type of communal living in Hukkeng. Also, they are exemplifying a defensive organization with its Chinese environment.

Linzexu Memorial of Fuzhou

If you want to learn more about the local history, this is the right place for you. Here, you can find a new insight into the past of Fuzhou. You can also learn about Chinese history during Lin Zexu while you’re being fascinated by his great statue. You will also find a museum full of artifacts that will immerse you in its history. Finally, don’t forget to visit its magnificently maintained gardens with ponds and native vegetation.

Xiamen University

This place will leave you completely fascinated by its beautiful green areas. Besides, you will be able to know its beautiful lake which is perfect to relax in a place far away from the pollution of the city. In the same way, you will be enchanted with its fantastic buildings of romantic architecture. If you visit Hukeng, you can’t help but walk around the University. Over there, you will feel a delicious sensation of peace and calmness.
