Lee withdrew through this majestic structure after their catastrophic defeat at Sailor’s (or Saylers) Creek to the east. They were looking for supplies that were necessary and were in Farmville. Lee gave orders to his rearguard to burn the span behind them. Almost as soon as the exhausted Confederates fired the wooden stands.
