Hidden Gems of Damascus, Siria are those breathtaking places in this city. Over there you’ll have an unforgettable experience with its fascinating streets. Also, you will admire its amazing monuments built between the 12th and 16th centuries. If you’re a lover of cities full of history and incredible atmospheres, this is the perfect place for you.

Virginia Creeper Trail

In this hidden gem of Damascus, you’ll find a beautiful trail. First, you’ll start your trip by exploring the tree-covered path. At the same time, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful streams around. Also, you will love the beautiful scenery that you will find on your route. Afterward, you will be able to enjoy delicious appetizers in the nearby restaurants.

The Bike Station

This will be the best place for you to enjoy a trip on your bike. Start your journey by renting a bike and all its equipment. This way, you can walk the beautiful trails of Virginia Creeper and get to know completely new roads that you won’t see in the main attraction.  Plus, you can learn about the history of the site and all the amazing places you can walk. Finally, you can talk with your tour guide to explore the different ways in Damascus with your bike.

Souq al-Hamidiyyeh

This place represents one of the oldest spots in Damascus. Over there, you will walk through incredible alleys full of merchants and travelers from all over the world. Also, it is the ideal place to do the shopping you want. In fact, you will be able to find everything you want, such as fabrics, food and much more. Finally, don’t miss the culinary delights

Al Azem Palace

This place will leave you completely in love with its exquisite architecture. It is located very close to the Umayyad Mosque. Over there, you can see what was the residence of the Governor of Damascus for 14 years. Besides, you will be impressed by its precise Italian marbles and Bosra columns. Similarly, your tour will be divided into different rooms. First, you will get to know the reception room. Then, you will see the Hamman and the kitchens. Finally, be sure to try the delicious food at the Naranj restaurant.

How to get there

The best way to get to Damascus from Damascus Airport (DAM) is by renting a car. It is a 21-minute journey from the airport to the city. 

When to go

This place can have an oppressive summer heat. The best time to visit it is between September and May.

How long

The Gems of Damascus have some incredible hidden treasures for you. In this way, the best recommendation is to take around 2-3 days to really explore this city. 

Opening and Closing Hours

  • Virginia Creeper Trail: you can visit this place at any time.
  • The Bike Station:  it opens from Sundays to Saturdays from 8:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m
  • Souq al-Hamidiyyeh: it opens from Monday to Sunday from 9:00 to 7:00 p.m. On Fridays it is open all day and night. 
  • Al Azem Palace: it opens from Monday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m

Planning

In this place, religion is pretty important. So the women should bring a headcover for visiting mosques and dress conservatively. Also, if you are traveling to Syria you must obtain an entry visa or transit visa issued by the Syrian embassy or consulate.

The climate in this place can become a little humid. Look for information about it and if there is rain, it is best to wear old clothes and changes that you can dirty. At the same time, you will have the opportunity to enjoy bicycle rides so don’t forget to rent one. 

History

The historic center city of Damascus in Syria is where you can find the hidden gems. This place is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Over there, you’ll find historical churches and mosques that have survived through centuries. 

Also, here you can find the mark of the Hellenistic, the Romans, Byzantines, and Islamic. Nowadays is part of the World Heritage in Danger list because of the Syrian Civil War.

The Great Umayyad Mosque

This is one of the most important relics in Islamic architecture and its history. Here, you will have to wear very modest clothing to be able to enter. Once inside, you can hear all the sounds of the souk drop away the moment you step inside. Also, the entrance leads you to a vas courtyard.

Over there, you’ll be able to appreciate its precious column, arches and green and gold mosaics from the Umayyads on the walls. Don’t miss this relic of the Byzantine world.

National Museum of Damascus

In the heart of Damascus, you will find this amazing place. If you want to learn about all the history and culture of Damascus, you cannot stop visiting its National Museum. Over there, you’ll find a lot of relics, artifacts and greater goods. At the same time, you will be able to observe the Dura-Europos synagogue that was rebuilt and moved to Damascus in 1930. 

Besides, you will be able to appreciate the first alphabet in history in its original precious tablet. Finally, you won’t be able to miss all the murals, tombs and statues.
