No visit to Australia is complete without going to the Outback, the breathtaking inhospitable central area that makes all Australians live on the continents’ coastal borders. The outback offers one of the most exciting drives which goes along the Gibb River Road in the Kimberley region of Western Australian.
The Gibb River Road takes a week to be covered by car, which gives you time to fully enjoy the wild and enchanting place that is the outback. As you’re going through the route, you will see that there’s some comfortable accommodation, you can stay at traditional cattle stations. Spend a night or two under the stars, see incredible waterfalls and visit rare Aboriginal rock-art sites.
This journey starts in Denver, but then the first place that it’s worth exploring is Windjana Gorge, where the asphalted section ends. Heading to the east, through the King Leopold Range National Park you will find one of your homestays at Mount Hart. Being 50 km far away from the main road will give you an insight of how vast the outback is, therefore, when people there talk about their neighbors, they’re talking about people who are hours away from them.
The next homestay is located at the Old Mornington Station. The main attraction in this site is Dimond George, where you can paddle those quiet waters in an open canoe while you’re being surrounded with red rock walls.
Once you get back to the main track, the road becomes exciting as you rattle over the bumps, avoiding the odd dingo crossing the road or the road train thundering past. Then, you will have to spend a night at Drysdale River Station so that you can continue with your journey towards Kalumburu and the astonishing Mitchell Plateau. The Gibb River may be isolated, but you will have to go further through the Port Warrender Road if you want to obtain a reward. Your reward will be one of the most amazing views in Australia, the three-tired Mitchell Falls.

Traveling to Australia it’s not the main problem because many airlines offer flights to their main gateway cities, but for this journey, it’s essential to hire a four-wheel-drive vehicle to travel through the Gibb River Road. Don’t forget to carry enough water, food, and fuel in case of emergency because you may have to wait days for another car to pass close to you if your car breaks down.
