Keukenhof windmill

It is very common to find images of mills and tulips when looking for references from the Netherlands. Now is your chance to take your own picture of this emblem of the orange country, without even leaving the park. This mill was built in 1892 in the province of Groningen. However, in that place it was in disuse, so, in 1957 he was transferred to Keukenhof where it is still in use. How to get there

Keukenhof is located between the towns of Lisse and Hillegom, 30 kilometers from Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. The nearest airport to Keukenhof is Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) 15.3 km away. You can get to Keukenhof by public transport via the small university city of Leiden; trains run from Amsterdam Centraal Station or Schiphol Airport to Leiden twice hourly, connecting with bus 54 to Keukenhof.

History

This 79-acre (32-hectare) row park and the Hower gardens were first introduced in the 15th century as the garden of a powerful local noble woman, Jacoba van Reieren. Each spring, Holland’s leading bulb producers send six million tulips, daffodils and hyacinths to Keukenhof, creating an amazing floral extravagance, where bees and butterflies dance. It shows how the tulip made its way from the steppes of Central Asia through the Ottoman palaces to the windows of Amsterdam.
