On the Oregon coast, around 40 miles of seemingly endless sand dunes is what we call the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, stretching from Florence to Coos Bay. Depending on the weather, the wind can blow and sweep the grains of sand creating towers that give any skyscraper a run for its money, and since the dunes change consecutively, they can create mountains of sand about 150 meters high. So you must be ready for some good jumps.

In the sand, you can see the shadows of the blue swallows flying by, and admire the coyotes and black-tailed deer in the distance, surrounded by the sand hills of the Siuslaw National Forest.

It is a one hour tour, your guide will accompany you and fellow passengers through this dry “sea”. You will hear the engine of the dune buggy roar, reaching speeds of up to 97 kilometers per hour, so you must be safe fasten your belt, get your safety goggles on, so that you do not get grains of sand in your eyes, and get ready to have fun.

During the tour, the landscape will be a beige blur, because most of the land is sand. However, for a change, you can go to the coast and see the beach, and on the other side see the green trees, while other buggies jump between the dunes. Although the sand falls on each curve, it is impossible to not enjoy the trip.

You must trust your driver; do not be intimidated by the great mountains, he knows perfectly what is behind, because although the dunes change every day, they are always ready, just as you must be prepared to have a stomach in this natural rollercoaster.

When to go

May to August, after the rainy season.

How long

You can choose a guided tour of 30 minutes or an hour. Reserve at least two or three days to explore the recreational area of the dunes and nearby coastal fishing villages.

Planning

Call the tour operators one or two weeks before to schedule your trip. Temperatures are mild, but it will cool down when relentless winds strike an average of 20 to 30 miles per hour. Wear closed shoes, long pants, and a parka.

Internal information

Ride in the morning before it gets too windy. Do not bring your good camera because the sand will be submerged in its cracks.
