Dog-sledding Tour – Klocka, Sweden is one of the most thrilling and fun activities. In the small village of Klocka, surrounded by low snow-capped mountains which seem to melt into the forest, reindeer line Lake Ånnsjön and birds fly freely above your head. However, these are not the only animals you’ll encounter in this charming and chilly village. A pack of bouncing dogs will be waiting for you to take the sled and let them guide you into the narrow paths within the forest and around the icy lakes in the area. Put on your warmest clothes and enjoy the thrill of dog-sledding in Sweden.

Things to Do

The first thing you will lay your eyes on is this group of massive dogs waiting to be leashed. However, don’t get intimidated by them, they might look strong and distant, but don’t be fooled by appearances; just reach out to them and you’ll see how adorable and playful they are. These dogs are so well-trained and well-behaved that they can tell from miles away if you are a novice musher, so you will be in really good hands (or paws).

Klocka Fjällgard

Your chilly adventure starts at Klocka Fjällgård. This is the only place that will make you forget for a while the ferocity of the cold weather. Klocka is a comfy, old farmhouse changed into a relaxed boutique lodging with a sauna.

However, to start your dog-sledding tour, you’ll need to leave the comfortable and warm Klocka and get into the wilderness of cold Sweden. You will slowly get excited as the dogs howl, bark and bounce waiting to start the trip, but that’s just the beginning because, once the journey starts, “you don’t have to teach them how to pull, you have to teach hem how to stop!”, as one of the dog-trainers says.

It’s an amazing experience to feel the transition from the turbulent beginning of the dog-sledding on the deep snow to the smooth and rhythmic sledding on narrow forest trails. The rush of adrenaline from the speed of the riding makes you feel like the king of the world.

Sweden’s landscape

Needless to say, the scenery is unbelievably breathtaking. The magnificent snowy view with the pinky red sunrise will stay with you forever. You will go from patchy forests to the snow-covered hills of Vallrun. Here, the winter sun won’t rise too high from the horizon. But hey, don’t get too much distracted! And keep your eyes on the road, as you might find some obstacles to dodge such as branches of snowed trees.

The energetic dogs

It’s impossible not to be astonished by the power and resistance of these dogs that pull sleds over 50 km every day. But after riding for a while, you are exhausted and hungry. It’s time to grab a bite and go back to Klocka. However, going home leaves you nostalgic. You want every second to last forever.

Dog-sledding in Sweden is for sure something you must try at least once in your life. Just make sure to bring enough clothes to keep you warm. You might move funnily, but believe me, that’s better than letting the freezing cold touch your body!

How to get there

You can find the nearest airport at 125 km from Klocka at Östersund. Scandinavian Airlines (ASA) from Solomon serves this airport. Besides, the boutique hotel of Klocka Fjällgård organizes snowmobiling activities and transportation to the airport.

When to go

The dog-sledding season in Klocka is from mid-December to late April. And the best time is from February onwards since the weather is less cold.
