Colca Canyon – Chivay, Peru

Colca Canyon, Chivay, Peru is one of the deepest canyons in the world. Peru has some of the best scenic views in the world. You will have some of the best viewpoints  at the depth of the canyon, the surrounding fields. There is an amazing variety of animals, including the great Andean Condor, which is in danger of extinction.

Things to Do

This deep canyon, known as the Colca Canyon, was named that way because it is found across the Andes. It passes through the Colca River and has been inhabited since pre-Inca times. It is a place that has a depth of 4,160 meters, more than twice the Grand Canyon of Arizona.

In the upper part of the Colca, you will see indigenous communities that still cultivate terraced terraces on the sides of the canyon. To explore the canyon you can go hiking, a quiet hike, bike rides or even hair. Also, you can relax in one of the many hot springs that come out of the volcanic depths of the canyon.

In addition, you have the possibility to practice extreme sports. You can run in the rapids of the Colca River by raft, kayak or canoe. You can also practice mountaineering, climb the mountain, trekking and then rest with an afternoon of fishing.

Cruz del Cóndor

Although it is hard to believe, you will have the opportunity to admire a giant creature, almost 3 meters in height, get up off the ground and undertake a magnificent flight so easily. The Andean Condor dances in the air above you, oblivious to a large number of people who point it out and take pictures of its incredible natural beauty.

Admire this marvel of spectacle from the Cruz del Cóndor, a place within half a dozen viewpoints that are part of Colca Canyon. You’ll be in the front row to see this lovely bird flying in the heights and depths of the canyon. Contemplate the natural magic that forms this place in Peru.

How to get there

The deepest part of the canyon is the section between Chivay (near the top of the canyon reaches) and Cabanaconde (near Cruz del Cóndor). From this area, the nearest airports are Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón International Airport and Arequipa Airport (AQP), both 208 km away by car. The latter has daily flights to and from Lima.

When to go

 A desert of height. The Colca region is marked by sunny days and cold nights throughout the year. The rainy season takes place during the summer (January-March). So the best time to visit this place is between April and May because there are not so many rains. If you plan to go at another time of the year, check the weather.

How Long

If you want to take a good experience, dedicate at least 2 days to this amazing place. In this way, you will be able to know and explore the trails and the areas that most appeal to you. Organize your schedule so that you make the most of the time.

Opening and Closing Hours

Most of the tours offered by the different travel agencies start from very early at 3 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon. However, if you travel on your own, you can visit at the time you prefer.

Planning

The places to stay range from modest guesthouses to luxury boutique hotels. Hotels along the edge can organize almost anything you want to do, from birdwatching in Cruz del Cóndor to hiking for a week in the wild areas of the canyon. For the tours, it is also recommended to book in advance as they tend to run out quickly by the Peruvians themselves.

Inside Information

Remember to wear comfortable and comfortable clothes for the day. If you are going to spend the night there, wear warm clothes and jackets, since the nights are cold. Do not forget your shoes and sunscreen. Remember that the national currency is the Nuevo Sol, most places accept dollars at day change and others accept euros. It is advisable to change your money to the local currency. Also, something very important is to avoid altitude sickness, you just have to relax, walk slowly and rest from time to time.

History

Originally formed by faults during the final stages of the Andean uprising, the canyon takes its current form of approximately 150 million years of erosion of soft volcanic rock by wind and water. When American aviators encountered this huge canal in the 1920s, they called it the Lost Valley of the Incas. The first cultures of the inhabitants stored and buried their leaders in Colca (niches) on the cliffs, from where the canyon takes its name.

In the city of Arequipa in Peru, it has wonderful places that are worth visiting. The Plaza de Armas is one of those places that you can not miss. It is located in the center of the city, it is surrounded by the capital and several portals. It is the perfect place to sit and relax. There are also restaurants nearby and even casinos. In addition, at night it is an impossible light show to lose. Known as the most beautiful square in Peru.
