Chichen Itza – Yucatan, Mexico, Stunning ancient monuments surrounded by jungle, sculptures, temples, and ceremonial areas made by the Maya civilization. Those are some of the things you can find in one of the most impressive and intact ruins: Chichén Itzá on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. This place makes its visitors feel like they’re in some kind of a dream. As you walk around the area, you can imagine the Maya people building up structures like the pyramid of Kukulcán. You can get a glimpse at how life was for them, as they praised their gods and prepared ceremonies for them.
This is one of the destinations that every adventurer should have on their list, especially if they want to know the 7 New Wonders of the World.
The wonders of the Pyramid of Kukulcán
The majesty of the pyramid of Kukulcán lies in its architecture, its the delightful symmetry, and the secrets hidden in it. During the spring and autumn equinoxes, the setting sun creates shadows that link with the stone serpent’s head at the foot of the staircase. Therefore, they cause an illusion and make it seem like a massively “snake” crawls down the building.
Also, the pyramid of Kukulcán works as a giant calendar. The nine levels facing a total of 52 panels represent the number of years. On the other hand, the days are defined by the 365 steps that make up the staircases on each face of the pyramid.
Another secret that the pyramid of Kukulcán has, is a much older pyramid located deep within. To access this hidden pyramid, you have to go through a small door. Then, you’ll find yourself at a passage that leads to the original sanctuary. Here, a chac-mool and a jaguar-shaped throne with dazzling jade eyes are forever entombed.
What else can you see?
You can definitely see the pyramid of Kukulcán from every angle of the site. In fact, you can admire its harmonious proportions from a number of different perspectives. But, have you ever wondered how the view is from the top? Standing at the top of the pyramid, you can appreciate the dense sea of trees that surrounds the area. Besides, you can spot some ruins, and open grass spaces formerly used for ceremonies.
Also, visiting the Ball Court is totally worth it, since this is one of the most astonishing structures. It is, by far, the largest field in Mesoamerica, as well as one of the sites with better acoustic sound. In other words, if you clap from one of its walls, you will hear the exact same sound from the other one.
Last but not least, if you want to see the pyramid of Kulkucán coming alive, you should definitely go to the light and sound show. It is included in the ticket price, and takes place every evening. The pyramid is illuminated by both the moonlight and artificial lights, along with sound effects. Certainly a magical and hypnotic show that you can’t miss.
How do you get there?
The nearest airport to Chichén Itzá is at Cancún, and the location is reachable by hire car or bus. If you’re going to stay at the Mayaland Hotel, you should get off at the park gate.
Many tourists visit Chichén Itzá on a one day trip, but you should try to stay overnight. That way you will be able to appreciate the whole area in the quiet mornings and afternoons. Finally, the interior of the pyramid of Kukulcán is only open in the middle of the day.
Where should you stay?
If you want to enjoy Kukulcán properly, you should get up early because by 10:30 a.m. it is already crowded with visitors. Try to be among the first through the gate at 8:30 a.m., so that you can manage an hour of near solitude. The best option is to stay at the Mayaland Hotel, located just a few meters from the east gate. It’s so close that you can even see the silhouette of the ossuary (bone sanctuary) from the doorway to the hotel bar.
