Castello di Miramare was built in the 19th century by Habsburg Archduke Fernando Maximiliano and his wife, Princess Charlotte of Belgium. While the castle project was being carried out, the husbands lived in a house near the construction. Later, this house will serve as Charlotte’s place of confinement, losing her mind after her husband’s death. The couple moved to the ground floor of the castle on Christmas Eve in 1860, before it was finished. Four years later, the archduke was named emperor of Mexico and embarked on an unfortunate adventure that led him to death before a firing squad in 1867. His widow survived until 1927, suffering from a mental illness.
