Birding in Central Park – New York, USA

Birding in Central Park, New York, USA is an option to relax and spend a day observing several incredible species of birds. Being in touch with the charming nature that characterizes this place will be impossible for you to forget.

Things to Do

Central Park is one of the landmarks of New York. This green lung in the center of the city houses an incredible variety of birds. However, it is also extremely important for human life due to a large amount of nature it possesses.

This park consists of 342 hectares of the desert, forests, large areas of pastures and bodies of water. In addition, it attracts thousands of visitors and bird lovers every year to admire this sanctuary of 200 different species approximately every season.

Most of the birds are migratory and move depending on the climates, warmer to the south and breeding areas to the north. However, there are some birds that are found in the park throughout the year. These birds are the blue jay, the red-bellied woodpecker, and the northern cardinal.

Streets

In the streets, 74 and 79 is the Ramble, a very quiet area surrounded by trees and bushes. This is the perfect place to sit and watch the flight of local and migratory birds. Also, you must be careful with small and colorful songbirds. On the other hand, from the Belvedere Castle, you can admire the great hawks as they fly south each autumn. In addition, you may be able to see how they feed on other smaller birds.

Another type of birds that you can not miss are the beautiful ducks, geese, and buffleheads. These birds spend the winter in the reservoir, between 86th and 96th streets. Woodpeckers make their mark in the northern forests, between 102nd and 106th streets. Meanwhile, the hummingbirds are thrown on the great hill, just in front from Central Park West on 104th Street.

How to get there

The nearest airports to Central Park are Newark Airport (EWR) about 20 minutes by car, and New York La Guardia Airport (LGA) 15 minutes away. You can take a train or bus but the trip becomes exhausting.

When to go

While birds can be observed in Central Park throughout the year, autumn and spring occur when many species migrate between north and south. Most are more active at dawn and in the afternoon.

How long

Central Park is a pretty big place. Walking through the park you can admire many varieties of birds, however, if you have the possibility to go more days, you will observe wonders. You can rent a bicycle or walk. The park can be visited in about 3 hours, but if you want to enjoy bird shows, take your time to admire, enjoy and photograph.

Opening and Closing Hours

The park grounds open their doors every day of the year from 6 am until 1 am.

Planning

Free kits containing binoculars, a guide and maps are available on loan from the Central Park Conservancy. Entering the park is completely free. Do not worry about the food, you have hundreds of options to eat in the park while walking and observe the birds that fly over you or stand in the trees. Do not worry about lodging, New York is a big city that has incredible offers, even luxury places.

Inside Information

There are 3 information points that offer directions, maps, and information about the park. These places are small structures that are modern replicas of the original information kiosks decades ago. These points are located at the entrance of the sixth avenue in Central Park South. At the entrance of 72nd Street that leaves Fifth Avenue there is another and another inside the park near the statue of Daniel Webster, West 72nd St.

History

With a new law that reserves more than 700 acres of land right in the center of the island of Manhattan, in 1953 the New York Legislature created the first largest public park in the United States. With the creation of Central Park, thousands of parks around the world were created to give a better quality of life to society. Frederick Law Olmsted and British architect Calvert Vaux were responsible for designing parts of the park such as bridges, roads, etc. Areas were also created for horseback riding, bicycles, and even areas such as ice rinks, boating, tennis. In addition to food and music areas.

Other Nearby Attractions

New York is a city full of thousands of places to visit. Today we give you a very moving and special option. After the attack of September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center went from being a place full of life to a sad and desolate place. However, almost 20 years later, this area has evolved incredibly among new skyscrapers, squares, and tributes to this tragedy. It is impossible that you do not admire the Memorial Plaza, Los Estanques.

Although at first sight, it looks like a common square, get closer and observe the enormous gaps left by the twin towers after being demolished. They have the exact size of these towers and are two large ponds with a beautiful waterfall. They are surrounded by thousands of bronze plates with the names of the people who lost their lives on September 11. An indescribable place that will touch every fiber.
