1. Tajik National Park, Pamir

It covers an area of over two and a half million hectares which is 11% of the total size of Tajikistan including parts of the Pamir Mountains. It is characterised by clean air and unspoilt nature, which attracts ecotourists. It is a part of a mixture of steppe, desert, grassland and alpine regions. It has long, cold winters and cool summers. Species known to live in the national park include brown bear, snow leopard, wolves, markhor, sheep, brown-headed gulls and geese.

2. National Museum of Tajikistan, Dushanbe

The National Museum of Tajikistan is a place often visited by visitors from the capital, where it is possible to learn a lot about the history of the state in different epochs. There are also collections of geological and other expeditions (the territory of the Pamirs has not yet been fully explored), and the number of exhibits is constantly increasing. A landmark of Tajikistan can be called the building itself, which uses Baroque elements. The museum is surrounded by a park area where you can stroll and relax on the benches.

3. Flagpole Dushanbe, Dushanbe

Dushanbe flagpole: few people come to the country for a couple of days, but if you still need to know what to see in Tajikistan in 1 day, the flagpole holder in the capital will be included in the list. Its height is about 165 metres, which rightly calls it the tallest in the world. The national flag was mounted on a special construction near the Palace of Nations, and the cost of its construction exceeded three and a half million dollars. Specialists from Dubai were involved in the design and manufacture of the elements; local workers only had to carry out installation work, which was completed seven years ago.

4. Fann Mountains, Sughd

The Fann Mountains are part of the Pamir-Alai system, located in the west and characterised by numerous stormy rivers, which are ideal for rafting, as well as glaciers and pristine lakes. This will appeal to both lovers of risky entertainment and tourists who prefer to follow the trail. The developed tourist and transport infrastructure makes this Tajik attraction popular with travellers. The easiest way is through Samarkand, and in the territory of the mountainous union there are equipment rental outlets, hotels and establishments offering domestic food for a moderate fee.

5. The Fortress of Khujand, Sughd

The Khujand Fortress is a fortress built in the 6th-5th century BC during Genghis Khan’s raids and served as a defence of the city of the same name from invaders. To break down the defence, the khan had to use about 75,000 soldiers, after which the fortification complex was destroyed, but several centuries later it was restored and now functions as a government residence.

6. Kayrakkum Reservoir, Sughd

The Kairakkum reservoir, next to which hospitals, children’s camps and other obligatory attributes of traditional recreation were built on the shore of the reservoir. Locals call it the sea, but in fact it was created artificially about a hundred years ago. Here you can not only swim, sunbathe and improve your health, but also fish or walk, watching birds.

7. Ajina-Tepa, Qurgonteppa

Ajina-Tepa is the territory of the monastery of the followers of Buddhism, which was excavated in the early sixties of the last century. In addition to the preserved walls of the building and the monks’ things, archaeologists managed to find a statue of Buddha made of clay, the largest analogues found in the entire Central Asian region.

8. Karakul Lake, Pamir Mountains

Located in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region at an altitude of more than three kilometres, this lake captivates with the beauty of its species and surpasses in size all other water bodies in the eastern part of the massif (the area is 380 square kilometres). Only the sounds of nature reign here, which is why residents of the megacities come here for a break from the noise. When deciding whether to swim in Karakul or not, keep in mind that even in summer, the water is very cold (a little more than ten degrees of heat). The lake has great transparency: you can see the bottom at a depth of 9 metres.

9. Hissar Fortress, Bukhara

This fortress is often mentioned in recommendations of the best places to see in Tajikistan, as its ruins are more than 2,500 years old, yet in excellent condition. The building successfully performed a defensive function (which is understandable given the wall thickness of over a metre) and was used as a place of residence for representatives of the ruling dynasty.

10. Sarez Lake, Badakhshan

Lake Sarez is one of the unique attractions of Tajikistan, which almost every traveller dreams of seeing. This is the only body of freshwater that is just over a hundred years old. Its formation is associated with tremors that triggered an earthquake at the beginning of the 20th century. After the destruction of part of the Mughal Range, a gorge appeared with an average depth of about 202 metres, into which the waters of Mugrab fell. The lake occupies almost eighty square kilometres, at an altitude of about 3.2 thousand metres.

11. Garam Chashma Hot Spring, Gorno-Badakhshan

At the Garam Chashma hot springs you can not only enjoy swimming in hot water, but also improve your health. The spring water has been considered curative for many generations in the region, so in the past altars were set up here, and later a balneological sanatorium was opened.
