The following list highlights some of the best places to visiting in Sudan. So if you are in Sudan, I recommend visiting the following:
- Taka Mountains Nature Preserve, Kassala, Sudan
- Musawwarat es-Sufra, Khartoum, Sudan
- Nubian Pyramids, Khartoum, Sudan
- Pyramids of Jebel Barkal, Northern State, Sudan
1. Taka Mountains Nature Preserve, Kassala
Surrounded by sand canyons and gorges carved out of the desert rock, Kassala is a picturesque landscape where ethnic groups, including the Beja and Rashadia, are the most numerous. Interesting seed markets, smells of incense, different colours and meeting people of different ethnicities make Kassala a unique destination where you will probably be the only foreigner.
2. Musawwarat es-Sufra, Khartoum
A valley surrounded by hills. It is a one-room rectangular temple with a pylon and six pillars. The inscriptions here differ from other sites in that depictions of elephants and lions predominate. What makes this series of Meloan temples special is the main structure of the site, called the Great Enclosure, with numerous ‘labyrinthine’ buildings covering more than 45,000 square metres. This, along with several walkways, numerous animal sculptures and even statues of elephants, suggests that the site was in fact a training ground for wildlife, including elephants.
3. Nubian Pyramids, Khartoum
The Nubian pyramids are practically a secret to half the world, as they are little known internationally. Tourism is quite low compared to Egypt, yet the Nubian pyramids are a real treasure that continues to stand the test of time. Although smaller than the famous Egyptian pyramids at Giza, the Nubian pyramids are equally magnificent and culturally valuable.
4. Pyramids of Jebel Barkal, Northern State
Jebel Barkal means “pure mountain” and not only became a religious reference of an era but also served as a shelter to build the longest sacred enclosure of the period after the Temple of Amun at Karnak. If you come to Jebel Barkal I definitely recommend you to go up there. Don’t be lazy, because the panoramic view from there is absolutely spectacular. The area has remained virtually untouched, as tourism is almost non-existent and only a few archaeological missions come temporarily to excavate the area.
