The Best Places in Kedah

1. Langkawi SkyBridge, Kedah

Source by Jutta M. Jenning – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

The breathtaking cable-stayed bridge, plunging through a picturesque 700-metre-deep gorge, is located on the island of Langkawi. The 125-metre “celestial” cable-stayed bridge goes skyward, plunges through the mist of the clouds and is based on a single metal support, making it one of the highest single-support bridges in the world. The entire load is reliably distributed by eight powerful cables that are connected to this support. The views from the Sky Bridge are breathtaking in their beauty: on one side, the blue Andaman Sea against the backdrop of mountain panoramas.

The Best Places in Kuala Lumpur

2. Menara Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur

Its height is 421 metres and this is the highest man-made structure in Malaysia, where you can climb up and see the surrounding panoramas. At the same time, climbing to such an impressive height takes no more than a minute. Today, the tower has become one of the main attractions of the Malaysian capital, its spire can be seen from different points of the city, and in the dark the impression of its contemplation is enhanced by spectacular lighting. Thanks to the fancy lighting, the tower eventually acquired a second name: “Garden of Light”.

3. Petronas Towers, Kuala Lumpur

Source by IQRemix – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

The twin Petronas towers, towering over the city at an altitude of 452 metres, have become a symbol of the pride and progress Malaysia has achieved in a relatively short period of time. Each of the towers is 88 storeys high, and this figure is no accident, as Malaysians consider all eight to be lucky. Tourists flock to the towers to see this grandiose structure and to be impressed by the views from the 42-storey suspension bridge. A presentable shopping mall is located on the lower levels of the towers, on the third floor of which is a popular science and entertainment complex.

4. Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur

Source by Mohd Fazlin Mohd Effendy – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

Literally “Independence Square”, this is undoubtedly the most important square in Malaysian society, from where the flag of the Union Flag of the United Kingdom was lowered on 31 August 1957 to carry the new flag of the sovereign state of Malaysia to the top of the 100-metre flagpole, thus proclaiming its independence. The square is located in the colonial district, and the shape and the lawns are no coincidence, as it was the site of cricket and military parades during British colonisation. Today, this square, where the Sultan Abdul Samad building is located, is one of the busiest places in the city for tourists and locals alike.

5. KLCC Park, Kuala Lumpur

Source by Michael Coghlan – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

KLCC Park is a park located just behind the Petronas Towers. On your walk through the park you will see more than 74 species of trees, fountains, waterfalls, walkways and sculptures. Inside the park there is a 10,000 square metre artificial lake called Simphony Lake. The lake has water fountains that can shoot water jets 42 metres into the air. So, every evening at 20.00 there is a water, light and sound show which is free to attend.

6. Chinatown Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur

Source by J. Philipp Krone – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

The gateway to Petaling Street is undoubtedly one of the iconic landmarks of Chinatown and Kuala Lumpur as a whole. Petaling Street is the heart of Chinatown. Apart from cheap accommodation and hostels, the street is lined with shops and street stalls selling typical Chinese food. Walking along the street you will reach the so-called Flea Petaling Street Market, an area of street stalls where you can buy all kinds of items very cheaply. In the same area of Petaling Stret you can also visit the Chinese Temples of Guan Yi and Chan See Shu Yuen. Another nearby point of interest is the Hindu Sri Mahamariamman Temple with its impressive façade decorated in traditional Hindu style.

The Best Places in Labuan

7. Labuan Island, Labuan

Source by Tiket2 – Under Wikimedia Creative Commons License

Labuan Island lies just off the coast of Sabah in the waters of Borneo. It is unique in that it is, in fact, a duty-free island that is separate from the surrounding states of Malaysian Borneo. While many people visit this offshore financial centre for the cheap beers, it has also become a firm favourite with divers looking to explore some of the beautiful reefs and shipwrecks found in the surrounding ocean.

The Best Places in Pahang

8. Sungai Pandan Waterfall, Pahang

Source by Zhi Yong Lee – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

The waterfalls are located on the Sungai Pandan River in the Sungai Pandan Forest Reserve. It is about 250 metres high and breaks at different levels. The lake at its base is shallow and allows you to relax. The beauty of the place is that there are only locals, no tourists, but for this reason it is also important to be careful and respectful, so go in the water with all your clothes on! Of course nobody will say anything to you if you go in a biki, but just as many people look at a nudist on a non-nudist beach. The only way to get to these waterfalls, located 25 km from Kuantan, is by car, rental car or hitchhiking.

9. Taman Negara Rainforest, Pahang

Source by Mohd Fazlin Mohd Effendy – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

This national park is one of the most beautiful to see in Malaysia. Many believe it to be the oldest rainforest in the world. It is a very popular destination for adventure lovers. One of the best things to do in the park is to enjoy the Canopy Walk. This is a suspension bridge over the treetops. Or it’s popular to ride the rapids or enjoy the many hiking trails that will lead you to discover waterfalls and other attractions. If you’re lucky, you may also spot some exotic animals such as the Malayan tiger or the Asian elephant. Although it’s not easy, it’s best to go on a night safari for a better chance.

10. Tioman Island, Rompin

Source by paVan – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

With an area of only 136 square metres, it is located about 50 kilometres from the mainland in the southeastern part of the country. Tioman belongs to the territory of the Pahang National Park and impresses with impassable forests, high mountains, picturesque white sandy beaches, coral deposits and turquoise waters. On the west coast of the island there is a corner of civilization, where a wide selection of flats for any income is presented, and around the harbour of Tekek there are many restaurants and duty-free spots. From Tekek, you can walk through a dense forest, swim in the waters of a local waterfall and return to visit one of the small villages that offer excellent dishes of the freshest seafood.

11. Cameron Highlands, Pahang

Source by marenphotography – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

Within the state of Pahang, on the ridge is Cameron Highlands, Malaysia’s largest resort at an altitude of about 1.5 kilometres above the sea. The territory of the resort in the 60s of the last century was declared a reserve. The area is ideal for outdoor activities: mountain hiking is carried out in comfortable conditions, the air does not heat up to more than 25 degrees. Local farms still use lush green hills to grow tea and strawberries. Here you can take a trip to the tea production, visit the tea museum and buy one of the best varieties of tea in the shop. Another interesting object in the mountains is the Valley of Roses, which is a multi-stage garden where roses, hibiscus, gladioli, carnations and other plants are grown.

12. Fraser Hill, Pahang

Source by andre oortgijs – Under Wikimedia Creative Commons License

Located in the state of Pahang, just a two-hour drive from the capital, it offers visitors plenty to see and do. Bukit Fraser is best known for its cool climate and fun activities that will entertain not only you but also your whole family. Although Mount Fraser is not as big as Cameron Highlands, it still offers plenty to do. The mountain is popular for its lush vegetation and most visitors come here for the annual Mount Fraser International Bird Show. With a population of around 1000, this charming little hideaway feels like a quiet Scottish village. The Tudor-style granite cottage sits amongst the brightly coloured flowers of an English garden.

13. Mossy Forest, Brinchang

Source by Andy Enero – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

Mossy Forest is a cloud forest located in the highest part of Cameron Highlands and therefore, from the viewing platform you could see clouds very closely. The road is not in perfect condition, so it is advisable to go in an SUV. At the entrance there is a path made of wooden planks that takes you two kilometres before arriving at Gunung Brinchang. The mist and humidity of the Mossy Forest creates an ideal biotope for moss, ferns, lichens and orchids. It is important to be a respectful tourist and not touch the unique vegetation of the area.

The Best Places in Penang

14. Kek Lok Si Temple, Penang

Source by Phuket@photographer.net – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

This is the largest religious site not only on the island, but in all of Malaysia. In a large square, spread out on a hill, there is a whole complex of temple buildings erected at different times in various architectural styles. The temple itself was opened in 1905, and the construction of the complex lasted 4 decades, and over such a long period caused a mixture of Chinese, Burmese, Thai and other architectural techniques. The main asset of the complex is a 7-level pagoda, inside of which about ten thousand Buddha statues are stored. Another remarkable object is a 36-metre statue of the goddess of mercy, which rises on the top of the mountain. You can climb to the top by a special staircase through endless shopping arcades.

The Best Places in Perak

15. Kuala Kangsar, Perak

Source by salehi hassan – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

Kuala Kangsar is the royal capital of the Malaysian state of Perak, and although this small city has long since been overtaken by Ipoh and Taiping, it remains an important place in local history. It was here that the sultans of Perak ruled, and it is still the site of the royal palace of the sultan, who still resides here today.

The Best Places in Sabah

16. Pulau Sipadan, Sabah

Source by chem7 – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

The island of Sipadan is truly Malaysia’s best in terms of diving and snorkelling. It is the best island in Borneo. It’s a coral atoll, surrounded by some of the most diverse and colourful reefs and marine life in the world. Here you can see all kinds of underwater creatures, big and small, while the island itself is home to white sandy beaches and beautiful green palm trees. It’s not the easiest island to reach, as it’s remote and isolated, but it’s well worth all the extra effort it takes to travel there.

17. Kinabatangan River, Sabah

Source by Mike Prince – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

Sabah’s Kinabatangan River is also known as the “Corridor of Life” and is one of Malaysia’s most incredible natural tourist attractions. This is because, in the region of Borneo that is constantly threatened by poachers and deforestation, this protected river provides a vital habitat for the survival of many rare species. It is one of the best places in the world to see orangutans in the wild, while a river cruise and jungle stay will bring you face to face with everything from proboscis monkeys to saltwater crocodiles.

18. Mount Kinabalu, Sabah

Source by Mike W. – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

At about 4100 metres high, it stands out from other mountains, which are about half its height. The top of the mountain is almost always decorated with a halo of snow-white clouds, and the lush tropical vegetation creates a spectacular contrast of colours. For the locals, Kinabalu is sacred, also called the “abode of the dead”: it has long been believed that the spirits of their ancestors live here. It has to be said that this is one of the most accessible peaks in the world from a mountaineering point of view. You can climb here without even having special equipment: the climb will take only 2 days. But even if the conquest of the peak is not included in the goal, in the vicinity of the mountain you can walk through the territories of the national park.

The Best Places in Sarawak

19. Gunung Mulu National Park, Sarawak

Source by Luke Price – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

The area of the huge park is approximately 50,000 hectares, which includes tropical forests, rivers and mountains. In the centre of this territory rises the “mountain crown”, which includes three peaks: Mulu, Benarat and Api. The most interesting secrets are hidden in the subterranean bowels as the largest cave systems on the planet are located here. The Karst caves stretch for many kilometres, on the way you can see many interesting things: these are huge grottoes, crevices, underground deposits, strange limestone figures formed by nature itself. The main underground attraction of the park is the Lubang Nasib Bagus underground passage, which has the largest grotto in the world. The underground hall of Sarawak is especially fascinating, whose dimensions reach an area of 20 football fields.

The Best Places in Selangor

20. Batu Caves, Selangor

Source by IQRemix – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

This is a complex of Hindu caves and shrines near the Batu River, in total there are about 2 dozen caves here, but only some of them are converted into religious shrines. Temple Cave is the most famous and most visited: here is the most important Hindu temple, decorated in the Tamil style, as well as a number of other Hindu shrines. Another, the Ramayana Cave allows you to learn a lot about the life of the ancient Indian king Rama: on the jagged walls of the cave, entire chronicles recounting the major milestones of his life are engraved. And finally Valluvar Kottam is a cave whose walls are completely covered with frescoes and couplets from the collection of poetic aphorisms “Thirukkural ”. The Batu Caves are not only a major attraction in Malaysia, but also the centre for celebrating the Hindu festival of Thaipusam.

21. Sunway Lagoon, Selangor

Source by Mohd Fazlin Mohd Effendy – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

Sunway Lagoon is a great place for families. The scale of this facility is impressive. The place is famous for its beautiful decor in traditional style. The water park is surrounded by large pools, beautiful buildings with decorative stone details and lush greenery. Relaxing in such an environment can be incredibly comfortable. It should be noted that natural materials are mainly used in the design and equipment of the water park. The floors are covered with real sea sand. It is part of a large tourist complex that includes hotels, shopping centres and cafes.

The Best Places in Terengganu

22. Perhentian Islands, Terengganu

Source by G E M – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

It is an archipelago of volcanic origin in Malaysian territorial waters. It consists of 6 islands. Here, rocky landscapes, the cleanest sea, the richest underwater world, the coastal area is full of coral gardens, which is why the islands are so popular with fans of underwater fishing. And in Perhentians there is a family of rare leatherback turtles. Despite the relatively modest scope of services on the islands, this is compensated by the extraordinary beauty of the surrounding nature, unusually beautiful beaches and a surprisingly relaxing atmosphere of serenity. On the islands Perhentian-Besar and Perhentian-Kecil you can find bungalows, guesthouses and restaurants in different price ranges.

23. Kuala Terengganu Bridge, Terengganu

Source by Cikgu Pauzi – Under Flickr Creative Commons License

The suspension bridge spans 638 metres over the Terengganu estuary and has a single 23-metre wide span. When the double span is closed, the water surface is 5 metres clear and there are four 15-storey towers, each connected by a bridge. The body of the tower mimics the minarets of a mosque and, to emphasise this theme, the sides of the tower are decorated with Islamic motifs cast in green granite. There are galleries and observation decks on the bridge for visitors to view. The scenery is beautiful. You can admire the entire city of Kuala Terengganu or marvel at the changing colours of the skyline depending on the time of day.
