1. Lake Tison, Adamawa
It is one of the closest to the city, easy to visit, and a good place to take refuge from the city, the noise and its chaotic activity. Lake Tison is a secluded spot, accessed by a path surrounded by vegetation, dotted with tropical flowers and, if you look closely, curious and colourful insects. At the end of the path leading to the lake, there is a bar that is open during the high season, perfect for quenching your thirst.
2. Lobeke National Park, East Province
In the forest you can find forest elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees, great white-nosed monkeys, grey-cheeked monkeys, giant forest pigs, brush-eared pigs, yellow-headed ducks and bongos. The bird life is also remarkable. Crocodiles can be found in the Lobéké Lake, among other things. On 3 July 2012, Lobéké National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Trinational Sangha World Heritage Site.
3. Kapsiki Peak, Far North
Known as a vertical spire more than a kilometre high. Among adobe and thatch houses, witches and markets, it is one of those hidden chests that still beg the traveller to take the trouble to open them. In some villages it is still possible to find old women wearing only a loincloth for clothing. Occasionally, the walk provides unexpected encounters, such as the nomadic Peul shepherds lazily driving their herds.
4. Foumban Royal Palace & Museum, Foumban
Besides being a museum, it also includes a part of the sultan’s palace. You will be able to see some beautiful bronze bells with women’s heads; human skulls of the enemies they killed in their day; the clothes of one of the sultans of a few centuries ago, who is said to be 2.60 metres tall; however, photos are forbidden. When you leave the museum, you will be given a demonstration of traditional Bamoun music. The instruments are really curious.
5. Lobe Waterfalls, Kribi
They have hardly any height, no great flow, no spectacular jumps. They would never be in any top ranking of the best. But one thing about them is curious and perhaps a little impressive: their proximity to their mouth, some fifty metres from the Atlantic Ocean. This aspect is what differentiates them from any other. You can rent a canoe for the trip, they are very affordable.
6. Ekom-Nkam Waterfalls, Littoral Region
To get to the waterfalls, you’ll take one of the most beautiful hiking trails of all those you’ll be able to do during your trip to Cameroon. It’s about 5 kilometres and you’ll enjoy the incredible scenery along a path that runs through different plantations. The village chief will give you permission (upon request) to enter and you will be able to see the waterfalls. The two waterfalls of Ekom Nkam are hidden in the thick jungle and fall from a height of 80 metres.
7. Kribi Beach, South Province
Towering palms are interspersed with other trees, providing plenty of shade as well as seats on the huge roots that grow up into the air. The shore is littered with large, reddish seeds, fishermen’s flotsam, and boats here and there. Kribi Beach is truly spectacular and is considered one of the best in the country. It is impressive in size and you can walk along this beach for hours, especially at low tide.
8. Mount Cameroon, Southwest Region
Mount Cameroon is a huge volcano at an altitude of 4,100 metres, which is always covered with clouds in August, as it is the rainy season. For this reason it is not possible (or advisable) to climb it at this time of year. This adventure requires good preparation, good physical fitness and the presence of a guide to accompany you. In 40 kilometres, you will make the ascent and the descent. This race has the reputation of being the most difficult on the continent.
9. Mbapit Mount, Western Region
It contains a volcanic crater lake that was formed from explosive activity or collapse during a volcanic eruption, dominated by 200 m high walls. It is ideal for hiking enthusiasts.
10. Metché Falls, West Region
They are one of the tourist attractions of Bafoussam. For the locals, it is a place of sacrifice to “remove the curse” and “mourn the dead”. At the entrance of the site, on the ground, you can see salt, coins, palm oil and even food. Today the site has become a purification site. The guide explains that the people there perform ritual ceremonies to remove evil spells.
11. Mefou National Park, Yaoundé
It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Yaounde, home to Cameroon’s famous chimpanzees. Created in 1999, Mefou National Park is a wildlife refuge where you will see gorillas, chimpanzees and monkeys in the wild. To explore this area in the best possible way, it is best to board a boat that will take you to navigate through this enclave.
