1. Kubu Island, Central District
It is a tiny island, 10 metres high and 1 km long, surrounded by kilometres of salt flats. So much that you can’t see the end of it! But it’s the hundreds of baobabs on the island that steal the show. Kubu Island seems like a mirage in a completely desolate region, yet it is very real, a tourist destination worth visiting, out of the ordinary, but with a beauty that grabs you.
2. Khama Rhino Sanctuary, Central District
The sanctuary is currently home to 40 white rhinos and 4 black rhinos as well as many other species, especially herbivores. The visit can be made from 7am to 7pm and there is also the possibility to stay inside the park. At the main entrance, after paying the 78.65P per person plus the price of the car, 96.80P, you are provided with an informative map with the most important places to see and where the possibility of seeing the various animals is greater.
3. Tuli Block, Central District
It consists mainly of privately owned game farms offering safari tourism. The Tuli is easily accessible by road from South Africa and all major towns in Botswana. You will find attractions such as Salomon’s Wall and Tswapong and Lepokole Hills. Perfect for enjoying the sunset over the rocky chaos of the region.
4. Chobe National Park, Kalahari Desert
With over 10,000 square kilometres OF diverse landscapes and an almost unparalleled abundance of wildlife, they are home to the largest elephant population in all of Africa. As well as offering great lion and leopard sightings, fabulous hippos and crocodiles along its glorious river, and an almost unimaginable wealth of birdlife. Combined with Victoria Falls it will make for a trip like no other.
5. Tsodilo Hills, Kalahari Desert
Giraffes, elephants, lions, zebras, antelopes and rhinoceroses appear alongside images of humans. The Tsodilo Hills paintings are among the most important in prehistory. There are more than 4,000 different paintings and drawings in this lost area in the Kalahari Desert. Many of them are estimated to be up to 25,000 years old and are listed as World Heritage Sites.
6. Makgadikgadi Basin, Kalahari Desert
Botswana savannah; the remains of the huge Makgadikgadi Lake, which once covered an area larger than Switzerland, but dried up some 10,000 years ago. The area is truly inhospitable – no one lives within 150 kilometres of Gweta and Mopipi – and the terrain is dangerous, the saline mud has a consistency akin to liquid cement, and it’s easy to get your car stuck.
7. Mabuasehube Botswana, Kalahari Desert
It borders the Gemsbok National Park. Wildlife most easily seen includes lion, leopard, wild dog, cheetah, springbok, gemsbok, wildebeest, hyena, eland and other antelope. There are no campsites or any hotel facilities. Visitors must be in possession of a permit and carry with them all necessary water, food, fuel and camping equipment for the duration of their stay. It is compulsory to visit the reserve in groups of at least 2 4×4 vehicles.
8. Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Kgalagadi
This park offers endless desert landscapes with migratory herds of animals such as wildebeest, gazelles, antelopes and more common animals such as lions, cheetahs and leopards. This park is also very popular for its famous red dunes which have a unique flora that has a great diversity. To tour this park, 4×4 trucks are required, as none of the roads are asphalted. There are several rest camps and visitors should make sure to leave at a good time to reach the next camp before sunset, as it is forbidden to travel after dark.
9. Okavango Delta, Ngamiland
The delta is home to a diverse ecosystem that has been created as the Okavango River flows into the Kalahari Desert and is a World Heritage Site. Here, you will also see some of the world’s most endangered bird and mammal species. It is affectionately described as an oasis, where wildlife thrives, especially during the breeding season.
10. Moremi Game Reserve, Ngamiland
In Moremi you will notice the difference from other places in the country: vegetation and waterways intermingle, creating one of the most beautiful landscapes in Botswana. The ideal time to visit Moremi is during the dry season (May to October) when you are most likely to see wildlife. In order to enjoy all that Moremi has to offer, I recommend a minimum of 3 days.
11. Nxai Pan National Park, Nxai Pan
The Nxai Pan landscape is covered by grasslands, dotted with the famous umbrella acacias and woodlands, and in the south you will find the baobabs, a typical African tree and a sight to behold. Nxai Pan is known for its Springbok population, elephants and the impressive annual zebra migration which attracts all kinds of predators and birds and therefore makes it a spectacular area for wildlife viewing in its natural habitat and a must in many cases when organising a trip to Botswana.
