The following list highlights some of the best places to visiting in Armenia. So if you are in Armenia, I recommend visiting the following:
- Khor Virap, Ararat, Armenia
- Garni Temple, Garni, Armenia
- Azhdahak, Gegharkunik, Armenia
- Tatev Monastery, Syunik, Armenia
- Jermuk Waterfall, Vayots Dzor, Armenia
1. Khor Virap, Ararat
This fortified monastery is a place of pilgrimage and a holy site of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The monastery is located on a hill near the town of Pokr Vedi on the border between Armenia and Turkey. Long ago, this was the site of the ancient capital of Armenia, Artashat. The monastery also houses a seminary and a residence for Armenian Catholics and offers one of the most beautiful views of Mount Ararat and the entire Ararat Valley.
2. Garni Temple, Garni
It was the king of Armenia Tiridates I, in the first century AD, who erected this temple in honour of Mithras the Sun God. The temple is a kind of small Parthenon, but its setting is quite spectacular, like the rest of the temples in Armenia, always located in strategic places as it is located on top of a cliff with incredible views of the Azat River canyon. It is a worthwhile visit. Do not forget that Armenia is a country with an incredible history, and this temple is the last vestige of paganism.
3. Azhdahak, Gegharkunik
A dormant volcano. The top of the mountain offers an enchanting view. A hike to this mountain offers a unique opportunity to observe ancient petroglyphs. Many petroglyphs depicting hunting scenes and celestial bodies have been found on rocks near Mount Azhdahak. Mount Azhdahak is believed to hold many secrets that have not been revealed to this day.
4. Tatev Monastery, Syunik
Probably the most beautiful monastery in Armenia. The most popular way to get to the monastery at the Golden Eagle’s Nest is to take a scenic cable car ride, known as Tatev Wings of Tatev Wings. The cable car and the panoramic views of the Vorota Valley are reason enough to go to Tatev Monastery, but once you reach the top, you will realise that this beautiful monastery is one of the most spectacular in the country. In almost impossible conditions on the edge of a huge abyss.
5. Jermuk Waterfall, Vayots Dzor
The Jermuk waterfall is about 70 metres high and is the second highest waterfall in the country. The water of the waterfall is freezing even in the middle of summer. Technically, Jermuk is like a water slide. It follows one of the steep slopes of the Alpi valley. There is a legend about the waterfall that locals love to tell foreign tourists about how the waterfall came to be known as the “mermaid hair” waterfall.
