Considered the most beautiful city in Catalonia, Beget is an incredible hidden valley that will receive you as if it were your home. Walk among its stone streets hundreds of years ago, watch the sunset show through the mountains and admire its wonderful and unique architecture.

This charming little town will dazzle you with its stone streets and natural surroundings. Although it is a small place, you can spend unforgettable moments with your friends or family. Beget is hidden in a beautiful valley high in the Catalan Pyrenees. Beget’s charm comes from its isolation.

Architecture

One of its main features is its medieval architecture, with its charming houses throughout the town. These houses are made of golden ocher stone and welcome you with their rustic doors and beautiful wooden balconies adorned with animals carved in plaster. In addition, you will also see the charming humpback bridges that cross the town. Without a doubt, this is an impressive place.

Sant Cristófol Church

On your way, you will come across a large and slender square bell tower rising over the Sant Cristofol church, from the end of the 12th century. Inside you will see a beautiful Romanesque baptismal font, there is also a gothic alabaster statue of the Virgin Mary, in addition, the majestar de Beget (Majesty of Beget). This is a great painting of Christ on the cross of 1.8 meters, it is painted in wood and full of bright colors.

How to get there

Beget is just over 16 km northeast of Camprodon, which is almost 97 km by road northwest of Girona airport. The nearby airports are Barcelona Airport (BCN) at 2 hours and Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO) at 1 hour and 30 minutes. You will need your car or rent a car to get to Beget.

When to go

 From April to June and from September to November they have the best weather.

How long

You can spend from a few hours here to a couple of days to live the full experience of all the peace and tranquility that this place offers you. You spend the day walking through its streets, getting to know the church and having a coffee in a restaurant.

Opening and closing hours

There are 3 restaurants in the village. They open from 8 am and close maximum at midnight. On the other hand, the San Cristobal de Beget church has an indefinite schedule.

Planning

The Forn offers rooms, a secluded terrace over the stream that offers beautiful views of the river, as well as Garrotxa cuisine. Although this town is not very well known and is small if you wish you can book in advance to be sure. The places to spend the night are simple but comfortable.

Inside information

Do not forget to pack your hiking boots and warm clothes, some nights can be somewhat cold. Also, if the church is closed, you can request the keys at 8 Bellaire Street.

History

Beget is declared as historical heritage of Spain. He had his own municipality until 1969 when he was added to Compadrón. Beget has always been a small place with few inhabitants. By the end of the 18th century, it had 662 inhabitants, however, by 2015 it had decreased to 27 inhabitants. It was completely isolated from motorized transport until the mid-1960s when a forest track was designed to Camprodon. In 1980, Beget finally connected to the 20th century with an asphalt road that connects with the road from Camprodón to Prats-de-Mollo in France.

Basilica of the Sagrada Familia

This could be, without a doubt, the best-known place in Barcelona. This icon of the city is visited every year by thousands of tourists to admire this temple of modern and religious architecture. It has 8 imposing towers, however, it is not finished, there are still 4 more towers. Each tower has different sizes and details. Inside, there are several impressive columns shaped like a tree trunk, because its creator, Gaudí, was inspired by nature.

If you are fond of art, this is the perfect place for you. This place is the union of several fishermen’s houses that Dalí was buying, which is why it is like a maze. Here he lived many years and created several of his works, in fact, you can still admire in it unfinished works. Among paintings, dolls, sculptures, every corner of the house will surprise you. You can understand the painter’s mind a little, from the moment you cross the door, you will undoubtedly feel that you are in Dalí’s house.

Montserrat

Now head to the heart of Catalonia. Even long before you arrive, you can see from the distance the imposing mountains of Montserrat. Characterized by its rocky peaks, it is the perfect place for lovers of climbing and hiking. However, you can also ride a gondola lift. The view that awaits you at the top will leave you breathless.
