To the south of Salzburg, which is Mozart’s birthplace, you will see the first lake of this trip. Lake Fuschl is one of the smallest of this place, but the most picturesque in the area. Descending to the next valley, you’re welcomed by the sight of sailboats moving around the calm waters of the much more touristy Lake Wolfgang. These views are enjoyable, but nothing compares to what comes next, and in order to discover that, you will have to head towards the south into the heart of Austria and the Alps.
As you come near to Lake Hallstatt, you will understand why until the last century, this place was only accessible by ferry. The road starts getting narrower as you go deeper and deeper into this site, the mountains range ever steeper, and sometimes during winter, the little settlement of Hallstatt is separated from the rest of the world.
Nowadays, a road has been made through the rock that goes straight to the town, but if you want you can still live the experience of crossing the fjord-like lake by ferry. We recommend you to travel early in the morning when the heavy mist rises above the water and the sun brings some hours of warmth to this isolated village. One of the things that will definitely catch your attention are the houses that were built into the steep mountainsides, which have a really rare and unique style.
You can either take the cable railway or hike up following the mountain path to the 7,000-year-old salt mines. Also, you can’t miss seeing the ossuary at the Catholic church, where you can see hundreds of painted human skulls that litter the site.
If you’re a nature lover, then you will adore traveling to Alpine Lakeland, where you will see many wonders made by the mother nature that will leave you speechless. Don’t think twice and make plans to visit Austria whenever you have free time to travel abroad.
When to go?
The peak months are from May through October. Hallstatt can be difficult to reach in winter when many things, including the salt mines, are closed down to the public.
How to find it?
You can rent a car in Salzburg or investigate about tours available at your hotel. Also, you can take a bus from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof to Bad Ischl, then a train to Hallstatt station and a ferry to Hallstatt village.
Planning
We recommend you to plan your visit to coincide with the region’s festivals, one of the most memorable is the Corpus Christi boat procession on Lake Hallstatt in late spring, and the Almabtrieb on Lake Wolfgang in early fall, when the cattle return from their summer Alpine pastures.
For hikers, there’s the Bartl-Hütte, which is a popular filling station, where they can admire the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the surrounding lakes from high above. If you want to eat it’s important for you to know that the menu is traditional hearty Austrian fare, including dumplings and pig roasts, as well as desserts, cordials, and schnapps made from locally harvested elderberries.
