1. Jaco Island, Lautem
Jaco Island is a unique postcard mecca. A small piece of land covered in tropical rainforest, most tourists come to Jaco Island for its underwater beauty near the beach, as well as for the opportunity to swim and sunbathe in the nature reserve. As the island is a protected area, there are no hotels or other accommodations. There are no facilities in Jaco, so you will need to bring everything you need for your vacation.
2. Tatamailau, Ainaro
It is the highest mountain on the island of Timor. Tatamailau means “grandfather of all”, in Mambai slang, one of the many dialects of East Timor and the aboriginal language of Ainaro. According to local instruction, when an aborigine from this region dies, his or her spirit goes to the top of Tatamailau. The point is visited by religious processions and even has makeshift log structures and impartial cleared areas below the summit, including a gallant log altar, much of which is surrounded by grass.
3. Marobo Hot Spring, Bobonaro
Hidden and little visited, Marobo is perfect for a day trip from the village of Maliana. Take a dip in the Marobo Hot Springs, a natural spring in the foothills of the mountains. To get to the hot springs, you’ll pass through Timorese haciendas until you reach the ruins of a resort. Although the resort is gone, a large pool, mud bath and mineral bath remain in perfect working condition, creating an eerie atmosphere.
